Here she is! She's one of my very favorites, so much duality there. She's girly but womanly, sweet & sexy, feminine & strong. Earthy yet creative in her approach.

    Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lI1v7HSD4E

This one might be my youtube Mona fave
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3ZyhwwAhlY

See how she's mastered the art of doing absolutely nothing around 2:30? And around 3:30 when she takes the headdress off? She makes it so...steamy!

    Apart from being one of THE great Egyptian dancers, she is surely one of the most beautiful creatures ever to grace the earth and when she dances, in the clip of I have of her , to all those drums in her gold bikini, wow yes steam galore.,r:;

I was asked to give a bit of background on what the video is about...Its Mona in Dallas...the 3.5 hour workshop where she is gives alot of tips on performing and how to dance with emotion in addition to "routines" that are so popular these days. She uses very modern music-nothing before 2004.

She wears a leotard in the video with pants over it and then she changes into something else later. She is shown on stage 90% of the time. She is in a hotel ballroom of some sort and there are about 5 pans out into the sea of students.

What I liked about the video: It has alot of "her" in it. She goes over alot of things that I feel are great for those that perform on a regular basis (be it in traditional and or non-traditional settings). Its long and you can really pretend to be in a workshop with her with the option of "stop" "fastforward" and "rewind."

Dislike: I wish it included the performance she did "in traditional dress" later that night.

Overall, I like it but we can't keep multiple vidoes of the same performer in our library. We just don't have the room! Merci and thanks for inquiring about the video.

    african tabla solo by Mona

the only bad thing is that a montage-man i think was a bit drunk while doing that DVD so he filled Mona's solo with pieces of Hannan and Nelly here and there. Very disturbing at times ;)

Ah, I love Mona. She's so cute and sweet. I was in a workshop with her at Ahlan wa Sahlan, and although I didn't learn anything "new" per se or really feel particularly challenged, it was so much fun to be in a class with her and watch her dancing. I tell you, she's still got it.

She was a little crazy (we have to make this strange movement and yell whoooooooooop! to confirm we were ready to go after drink breaks. Mad!), but loads of fun, and with that gorgeous sweet smile and such a lovely presence on stage. I said it then and I'll say it now - so sweet I want to eat her up with a spoon. ..g.:

    Re-discovering Mona!

I was just looking through a bunch of videos looking for inspiration for a choreography.
Oh look, there's this old Mona video... WOW!
Sometimes you only know what you've been missing when you see it again!
She's teaching a workshop in a hideous aerobics-outfit on a raised stage in front of a big bunch of students (of whom you only see the hands occasionally) - but what grace, what feeling!

Please, can I be like Mona when I grow up? Minus the aerobics-suit ..g.:

I remember seeing her on a VHS video that I rented from an Egyptian shop about 15 years ago and I was a fan even then.

Mona is one of my all time favorite dancers. Here's all I could find in a hurry, I think a few are repeats of above, but some of them are lighter - slightly better quality clips.

    Re: Mona el Said

If you are a fan of Mona's, you might want to get the DVD's from the LIttle Egypt sponsored worshop/shows in 2004. I think Mona is so much fun . . . her performance was HOT . . . love to watch it. I keep putting the workshops on my "wish list" . . . . but I have been distracted lately.

I was hoping Mona would be back in the States sooner, but it doesn't look good for 2008 so I am hoping for 2009.

I love the From the Heart workshop videos and watch them over and over again. She is so good about answering questions and helping students. And I loved her comments about languishing and not rushing. At one point she was saying something like letting the audience wonder what you were doing last night. Steamy!

..l;, ..l;, ..l;, AWESOME. She wasn't talking about crocheting granny squares.
Amartia, Yasmin (DC), so local to you sometimes teaches Mona workshops- she's got some unedited footage, she used to work with her night after night- even owns one of her old canes. She really provides some behind the scenes perspective. ..g.:

Where are they available? I think some new Mona videos are exactly what I need!

Also, those who have the workshop videos from Little Egypt, what does she teach on those?

Ah, yes, and she was telling us to be "tigers" too at some point . . . I have to get my notes from the interview that I did after the workshop . . . after 4 years the brain starts to lose the details. But why try to remember when I can post the link from Gilded Sepent ..l;, CE Barros reports on Mona for the Gilded Serpent and here is the Saturday show CEBarros reports for the Gilded Serpent

Oh right, I hadn't read the "from the heart" at first, all I saw was Mona.
Do you have both videos? What level are they? Does she teach more technique or choreography?

OK, forget about my question, I just read your article, it's all in there ;-)

Hard to answer this. It isn't choreography like 1, 2, 3, 4. She does the "same but different" thing that Fifi does, but she does stop and break things down, take questions, bring dancers up onto the stage either to help them get a move or to show it on other bodies. And she talks about the music, about the dance, about the feeling, about expression.

Mona looks lovely in these videos; fit, beautiful, full of joy. "From the Heart" is really a good title for them. I would have to go back and watch both again to see if I liked one over the other. I think each one is about 3 hours long or something like that.

    I love watching Mona dance.

Well, you bought them now. . . so I hope you enjoy. When you asked earlier for comments, I was leaving town for a workshop (LOL, what else) so I thought that it would be better for me to post the link for the review/articles that I wrote. I very much enjoy watching the show video because you can see so much of Mona's joy at dancing. Souzan's comments regarding the workshop vids is so true. Mona hates the 1,2,3,4 stuff, LOL, she kept telling us that. I think Fifi says something similar Mona is still my absolute favorite and I wish there were more videos available of her earlier performances. I suspect because Mona spent a lot of her dance career outside of Egypt that she didn't get the coverage that Fifi has gotten on film.
