I don't see Rachel Brice in the video anywhere . . . do you mean Jill Parker?

It's hard to shine when you are dancing in a group. I think she executed the choreography fine. I even saw a little smile on her lips...briefly. It's a good thing she went the direction she did, her facial expressions definitely lend more to her style now than it did then.

Yeah, It think how you worded your criticism is a little odd, ie "not impressed". But anyway. Rachel is in the second row of the "box" on the right at the beginning of the video behind the blonde. AT 0:25 she is in the middle of the screen behind and in between 2 dancers (Jill Parker on the right and Rose Harden on the left). She is also next to a pale redhead with dopey hair, and that would be me (we do the passbys together). Before you play the video she is in the frozen youtube still. The video was taken in 2001 and a lot of the dancers in the troupe were baby dancers (not Rachel though).

Tribal Butterfly, if you are comparing her in U.G. to what troupe she's in now - its kinda unfair IMO because you're comparing apples to oranges. I guess some dancers think she oozed stage presence out of the womb and did not gain it with experience like the rest...c::

OK! I am sooooooo freaking jealous of you right now! To have had the opportunity to dance with Rachel Brice, Jill Parker . . . Wow! You are lucky! Who else have / do you dance with??? Are you a well known tribal dancer? I can't tell because your profile pic is a cartoon . . . .

LIES! Surely she burst backbending and glitching out of the head of Athena herself!I guess some dancers think she oozed stage presence out of the womb and did not gain it with experience like the rest.
It really isn't fair to compare someone who is only in her 30s with footage of herself eight years ago, either. It does indeed take time...

Rachel is all about getting into her body and the movement, and bringing you with her. Here she is great at that too, but she is not really into the projecting super-friendliness-high-spirits thing, which is what some of the other dancers are doing. I think Rachel is great here, but I also think there must be a reason she moved on to do mostly stuff that feels different - that's more "her". May we all be so lucky in our dance journeys.

Re: rachel brice in ultra gypsies...not overly impressed with her here...others bette
I don't know how to answer this. ,f:: I can't say "I'm fabulous and you should know who I am" (that would be arrogant). I guess I could say I'm nobody, but that doesn't feel good either. Ummm, I guess I'm like a good portion of the dancers on bhuz who may be known in their local circle and not beyond. I took a long hiatus from dancing in early 2003-2007, right when the "tribal fusion" wave was heating up ..cr.: I kick myself for not hooking up with Rachel's classes/practice then, maybe I would have been in the first incarnation of the Indigo. Ahh well ..l;,
I started dancing in Carolena Nerricio's classes in the mid nineties, moved onto taking from Katarina Burda. Went into her troupe Aywah! and danced with Mira Betz for several years; Zoe Jakes and Elizabeth Strong joined right after I left so I knew them sort of but didn't dance with them. Joined Ultra Gypsy and Jill Parker, Rose Harden, Rachel Brice, and Sharon Kihara were in the troupe; although I stayed after Rachel and Sharon left. I've also danced with a number of should be famous Bay Area dancers, but they are not the BDSS tribal gals. So yes, I know a bunch of these people and talk to them still -- I would probably invite them to my birthday if I was having a big bash. There are a lot of other good dancers from Ultra Gypsy still floating around you probably have never heard of either! ..l;,
Now I have my own dance collective as I like to call it. I've got all my friends (and now some new talent as word has spread) and we do performances -- I'm sort of an impressario! I dance under the stage name Denzel now.

This is Fabulous! Well . . . . I feel honored to have spoken with you here on bhuz. You are quite the accomplished dancer. I have only dreamed of even meeting these dancers you speak of. WOW! I am totally jealous!!!! Would love to be in your shoes!!!!!
I'm in a group called Trybe Habibi Bizarre. If you were at 3rd coast Tribal, you would have seen them perform. I'm one of their newest members. I recently left another troupe that was more traditional in nature because I am sooooo passionate about Tribal. Anyway, our format is very similar to Carolena's. But I believe we are technically considered an "ITS troupe".
Anyway . . . yay for you! What a dance life you have!!!! I just think this is too cool!!!!

jetgirl . . . I just looked you up on you tube. Did you dance to a Balkan Beat Box song while wearing an assuit skirt??? It said "Denzel" . . . well . . . . if this is you, I really like your style! I definitely see the influence of you teachers / dance sisters! So cool! Great performance!

Hey, I didn't know that was public. Argghhhh. That was my first performance since 2003, well except when I was 8 months pregnant and danced at Tribal Fest in 2006! I only like the last 1/4 of that performance. Hopefully I'm a little better now as I've been working on my dancing in the last year. I hate how youtube doesn't give the feeling of the interacton with the audience, which I think is my strong point -- that's why I don't like to put things there.
But thank you! You're very kind.

Re: rachel brice in ultra gypsies...not overly impressed with her here...others bette
i have a sincere question, not knowing about much american
the clip is very tight, like the rockettes.
is it "of the style". to play a 2/4 zill pattern ( longa ) to 4/4 ( balady )music?
dont yell at me, i honestly do not know, is this not a place to be informed ?

Re: rachel brice in ultra gypsies...not overly impressed with her here...others bette
haha! It was a struggle to get all those baby bellies to play the typical 2/4 with a couple of accents as it was. Although for many years that is the only pattern an ATS (American Tribal) dancer would play (I don't know if that is true now.
I have to say that the choreography was on beat, the video editor took some liberties and did not always match up the video track to the music precisely, so we look out of time sometimes, which we weren't *sigh*.

Re: rachel brice in ultra gypsies...not overly impressed with her here...others bette
From what I figured out over the years, not everybody uses the same terminology. The term longa is not widely used where I live, and if it is used, it refers to the RLR zill pattern taught by Jamila, who I believe teaches it along with a 4/4 piece of music.
From what I have gathered from many different sources, that the same zill pattern counted as and-a-1 and-a-2 and-a-3 and-a-4 can be played a-ok for rhythms that have 4 beats to a measure, just as fine as to rhythms that have 2 beats to a measure.

Re: rachel brice in ultra gypsies...not overly impressed with her here...others bette
yes, longa is turkish 2/4, rlr rlr rlr rlr.
thank you all for being so nice!
i just might ask another question some day!
jamila was great to our art for many many things, but heer use of an "endless" reel to reel is not good in my book.to me, you have to match the music to what you are teaching, not just jump in where ever the tape is.
she taught combos too, some of the older dancers still revert to these step lists.

I've seen this clip before, and I think these gals are very good. I like everything about it. I wish, personally, I saw more Tribal Bellydance, or any troupe bellydance really, like this. Their sychronicity is great; they're on time, and I like their classy, not over-the top look. I think Rachel's great! ;-)
