Artemis Mourat

I just had a couple classes with Artemis Mourat over the weekend and wanted to express myself in a "fan thread". She is a patient teacher, and so full of information to impart that a two-hour class flies by. She "improvised" a zill class at a moment's notice and gave us a great overview of different sounds and rhythms. Her "theatrical skirt dance" class was a lot of fun... and she gave us many details of what that dance technique is and isn't. She's not only a good dancer, she's my favorite kind: a thinking dancer. That's why I'm a fan of hers.

Artemis is one of my favorite dancers and teachers. I took a two-day workshop with her last fall, and am going to one of weeklong intensives in July. She melds her passion for the dance with an equal zeal for research and respect of its origins. I can't wait!

I took a full weekend workshop with her a couple of years ago and I loved her. I knew next to nothing about Turkish Rom dancing and I wouldn't even attempt to try it today without some private lessons, but she gave me a huge beginning understanding of the dance as well as a healthy respect for the gypsies and their plight.

And she was soooooooo fun and funny too!!

Artie is the bomb-diggity! She's an awesome dancer, she flies on the zills, she researches like crazy, she is a generous teacher and an all around fantastic, loving, hysterical person.

Massive love for Artie. Massive. I've done two years of workshops with her (Three days in Osaka two years ago, Two days and in the show last year in Tokyo when a few of us also got to take her out for okonomiaki, and I just paid for "master classes" this September in Tokyo).

The second year she brought me gifts (!?!) for helping out with minor translation the year before. Each year she's targeted a habit for me to ditch (even remembering she'd noticed such and such a habit the year before but that I might not be ready to ditch it then) and she's read over an article I wrote about the scene here ofr NADA magazine, critiqued it, and is pushing me to submit an updated and edited up version to GS.

I proudly call her my bellydance mommy and look forward to her GS article on the Turkish dance scene here in Tokyo.

Studied with her once while i lived in Seattle. She was a delight!

Artie sent me a cassette of one of her first performances at the Salaam Supper Club (anyone in the DC area remember it?), and she said that she couldn't play her zills. We both studied under the same teacher a long time ago - Adriana!
