She's a lovely dancer. Malika was trained by Rocy and teaches at her studio. I will be bringing her to Chicago for a workshop in the new year.

Zobaida is a pretty common Arabic name, isn't it? Maybe the alternative spelling is making you think of the other Z word?

It is a last name but it's certainly not a common one. In Arabic, the name "Zobaida" and "Zubaida" are spelled the same: زبيدة

In Arabic slang, the word "zob" or "zub" is slang for penis. It's spelled like this: زب

Just add "-ida" and it becomes Zubaida. A similar name Zubair, is the last name of a Saudi friend of mine. She gets annoyed when Arabs giggle at her name because it's like someone in America with the name "Gaylord". Actually her last name is highly, hilarious because "air" is also slang for penis in Arabic...hahaha.

I'm just theorizing but maybe zob, zobaida and zubair all probably have a root in Arabic. Arabic is one of those languages where the root can be modifed to make new words.

Anyway, my Arab friends would laugh if someone had the last name Zubaida. It's a legitimate last name...a funny one at that!

Yes, I'm well aware of what zub means.

Zobaida is a common first name. Haven't heard of it much as a surname, but I think a dancer has more "license" in this regard. Haven't heard any Arabs I know make an association between "Zobaida" and "Zub" but I guess there's a first time for everything.

I don't mean to steal the thread away from Malika Zubeidah or from Rakgilr but, as a Zobeida, I do have to say that I get snickers in Arabic clubs when my name is announced. I had no idea about this when i picked out my name and it was only after about nine years of working on my professional image did this issue come up. by then it was too late to get another name because everybody, all my customers knew me by that name. Anyway, you learn to deal with it but it does suck because i really love my name.

Besides that I have met two other arabic Zobeidas so the name is used.

I'm shocked to hear this. I'd think Rocky would have warned her about this. And I know that Malika knows many Arabic speakers and even speaks some herself. So on second thought, i'm sure she's aware of it.

I hope my new name doesn't mean anything terrible. But it's hard to avoid. I took a Brazilian friend to a BD show and she snickered when a dancer name Shoshana was introduced. She said that in Protuguese Shoshota means the C word and it sounded that way to her. So i'm sure many of our names mean other things somewhere.

Also when I was in Egypt a Japanese dancer was introduced and I was told her name in Arabic sounded like the an insult to someone's Mother. Seems that dancing in Egypt she'd be award of that but I guess it was too late to change it.

There was a student dancer near my area, her name was Amounna or something like that. She was dancing at a venue in the area with a band that is mostly Turks, Armenians and Greeks. When they announced her name the turk and the greek started laughing and later they told us it was because Ammouna means "pussy" or "to the pussy" depending on the language, but it is an Egyptian that has no such meaning in Arabic.

I've only heard zoubeida as a first name
And those 3 words have 3 different roots.
The root system in arabic and hebrew have words with 3 letter roots
so zoubaida is z-b-d
zoob is not classical arabic????
And zubair? z-b-r?
I don't think those words have anything to do with each other.

Yes! I agree, very lovely. I'm sorry, I didn't mean for your thread to get dragged in this direction; I just didn't want anybody named "Zobaida" to feel like they have to worry about their choice of name (waves to Zobaida upthread).
