My new idol: Rachel George!

One of the most impressive bellydancers I've seen perform is Rachel George. I had never heard of her until she was the featured instructor for a weekend workshop I attend locally once or twice a year.

She is a level 3 graduate of Suhaila Salimpour, which explains a lot. In fact, having never seen a live Suhaila performance, I didn't necessarily "get" what the big deal was about her until I watched and learned from Rachel George.

Now, not all great performers are great instructors and vice versa (which I'm sure all of you know all too well). So let me just say that not only is Rachel a treat to watch, she is a patient, thorough and kind instructor as well. I would definitely recommend taking her workshop if you have the opportunity.

Thanks to Rachel, I finally "get it" and now I am itching to study with Suhaila herself (too bad I live on the opposite coast)!

I did not buy her DVD after the workshop, simply because I reminded myself how many I already have at home- and maybe I should just use them on a regular basis (as opposed to almost never). But now I regret that I didn't get her instructional to take home with me.

I've been a die-hard Rachel George fan for a long time. Her dancing is top notch, she's an excellent instructor...and she is a kind, warm, and generous woman.

And now she's the 2010 Universal category champion from the Belly Dancer of the Universe competition.
