Khadijah

I took a workshop this afternoon with Khadijah, originally of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and now based in Denver, Colorado. She taught two hours of khaleeji dance. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!

If you get a chance to study khaleeji with her I highly recommend it. She clearly knows her stuff, and was very good at sharing variations of movements, gestures and stylizations as they varied by country (mainly she focused on Saudi, Kuwaiti, Iraqi, and a little UAE). She also spoke of both the Bedouin and African roots of the dance along with a lot of modern cultural context. She is an eloquent speaker, an amazing and very strong dancer, and a very giving and gracious teacher. She also has a killer sense of humor.

It is always an honor and, for me, a little bit special to learn Middle Eastern dance from Middle Eastern women, and today was no exception. Much respect to Khadijah, and to the khaleeji dances, and thanks to Halanda Studios for sponsoring her!

Very nice. I would love to take a workshop with Khadijah. I saw that video awhile back and even made a post about it. Oh, when am I going to be able to make it over towards the West Coast?

I met Khadijah in Cairo 3 years ago. She's very sweet and an awesome dancer!
