    I am always confused by the facial expressions that are shown in the old movies when people are watching belly dancers: they range from dumbfounded, to confused, to slightly amused yet suspicious, to something that looks like "someone just poked me with a stick!".... what's that all about? ..l;,

    I love this dance scene. I have the movie it's from, Son of Sinbad, on video. This movie is a constant parade of women in glamorous harem fantasy costumes. It was made by Howard Hughes' production company, and Hughes used it as an excuse to indulge his desire to see a lot of scantily-clad beautiful women gathered together.

    The scene in your link is the only "belly dance" scene in the movie, but there are several other scenes of other types of dance such as modern dance.

    Also - I agree, Liz... our man Vincent was a bit of a cracker! Loved the bit when he's surprised by his own dancing shoulder. ..l;,

    I'd never seen Nejla dance before watching this clip either, but I remembered reading about her being on the cover of "Port Said" in "Snake Hips."

    She is very good! :)

    And I agree...Vincent Price was pretty stinkin hot! ;) Then again, I thought he was pretty handsome as an old man too. :)

    I've always been in awe of her beauty (and cuteness) in her photos. It's lovely to see her dance. Thanks for posting.

    Ironically, Lili St. Cyr was in another dancing scene in this same movie. I didn't know the man was Vincent Price. I'd been wracking my brain trying to figure out who that was.

    Re: Nejla Ates

    Here are some pics of Nejla in street clothes with celebrities, plus some dance related photos I've never seen before, including one of her posing while a sculptor works on the infamous nude statue! . I didn't think I'd ever find a picture of that. There are also two pics allegedly of her as an older woman, but I don't know if these or the article itself are genuine considering she is widely reported to have passed away in the early 60's. Supposedly she did overdose on barbituates, but survived and returned to Turkey letting the public think she had passed away.

    Nejla Ates Story by Özer Baysaling

    Here's biography focusing on her love life. It alleges that she passed away in 2005.

    Here is a good collection of photos of her, mostly ones often seen before, but also a couple new (to me anyway) ones. Two of them are of her without makeup by her statue.;

    I like this one a lot. He's not appreciative of the statue, at least not outwardly:
