Aziza of Egypt
Hi
Several of us saw her for the first time last month, we've just found these videos (thanks Aleya, whoever you are!) . . .
Really nice, very ladylike, great taste in music, nice to see a new up and coming egyptian dancer. We saw her at ElLeil where she outclassed her surroundings, but hese vids of her dancing at the Semiramis (where Dina also dances, which I think she deserves)

As far as I know she is egyptian, its reassuring that there are some up and coming native dancers to keep the scene fresh!

Re: Aziza of Egypt
Aziza is Egyptian and incredibly gorgeous, isn't she?
Aleya is a dancer/teacher who moved from Los Angeles to Cairo last year. *shamless plug alert*
We'll be hosting a workshop with Aleya when she comes back to visit LA this May (check LARaqs soon). I believe she's also doing a workshop in SF in May with Hala.

Re: Aziza of Egypt
My eyes lit up when I read that the group saw her at El Leil!
When I was in Cairo early March, every club had been torched and didnt look like they would be re-opening any time soon.
Aziza was/is a great nightclub dancer in Haram St.
I heard she is being coached/trained by Raqia Hassan these days... she is the 'new dancer on the block' and no doubt being groomed for greater things.

Re: Aziza of Egypt
I feel fortunate that I saw her at El Leil in January just before the revolution.
I really enjoyed her show - she was great, and very natural - my Egyptian friends were a little unimpressed, they were like, "well, this is just normal good Egyptian dancing." not realizing how rarely we get to see it abroad (or even in Egypt!) Haters are gonna hate.
She is affiliated with Raqia now, I hope those greater things happen in Egypt and sooner than later - so sad to think of Haram Street clubs closed.

Re: Aziza of Egypt
[QUOTE] Yes, I saw her before she was 'Aziza' and she was a nice nightclub dancer.. but this is what is 'normal' in Egypt. She did stand out in terms of elegance and and trying new variations etc. I agree she would not necessarily stand out for Egyptians.. they tend to go for dancers who are vary bold and outgoing in their style (generally speaking that is).
Yes, I imagine she is being groomed for the international market. It will be interesting to see how her dancing develops. She is affiliated with Raqia now, I hope those greater things happen in Egypt and sooner than later - so sad to think of Haram Street clubs closed.
I thought she actually started to look a bit like a Randa/Dina copycat last time... this would be a real shame.
I agree about Haram St, although personally I very rarely frequented this area as it was over priced and less exciting that a local Egyptian nightclub.
Having said this, they are an important part of the nightscene culture which attracts tourists from the Gulf and creates employment for so many dancers and musicians.
