Just had the zills workshop with him last sunday at Yaa Halla Ya'All and it was so awesome! His show performances were amazing too of course. I'd love to take more classes with him next chance I get!!!

Re: Karim Nagi
I didn't take his class at Ya Halla Y'all but I was super impressed with his performances (including a zills-only dance) and his intelligent comments at the Sunday panel. He seems like a super-cool cat. I accidentally barged into his zills class ( i had left my luggage in there during lunch) and it was on fiyah! WIsh I'd had the chance to talk to him more.

i heard he is coming back next month...this time greg and lakisha have been asked to dance in the show.....thats all we have heard....does he have a twin ? lololol

Re: Karim Nagi
You know, Karim can be a bit opinionated, and I've seen people take offense to him when I personally didn't think it was warranted. There are things he has said that I don't personally agree with, but I kind of take that in stride. He's a great teacher, not perfection incarnate.
I know a mom who felt that he wasn't kind to her daughter, but in the exchange I witnessed he was polite...he just wasn't overly gushy to meet a fan girl. I think it's possible he rubs some people wrong. Very few people don't. I've sponsored him twice and I'm having him back in February. I think he's as professional as they come. I've always appreciated his prompt and organized replies. As a teacher, I think he's stellar and I've always had "ah ha" moments in his workshops. However, he's human. So it's possible he's hurt someone's feelings along the way.

Re: Karim Nagi
I also really respect and admire Karim. I have a hard time imagining him being really rude, of course I have no idea what the situation was. Well, we all have our days. I know I do. Much love to the Turbo Tabla.

Re: Karim Nagi
well, he came here again..sponcered by the tribal school.2 of my dancers were asked to perform in the "best of fresno belly dance " show.greg was already doing the bedoin bazar in san diego, and lakisha had had enough last year and declined.
i had 1 dancer take his cane work shop.dont know if he has an evil twin, but she hated it so much, she did not stay for the second class.
first off, most of those attending are tribal with no knowledge of the basic ethnic steps.he taught moves i would keep for more advanced students...when they did not get it right offm, he would roll his eyes and get nasty.
the show turned out to be a varity show...1 other of my dancers went thinking lakisha was still dancing. a dancer from L A danced in a ball cap and torn pants...another in ruffled pants..more fusion..not what he speaks of in his interview on GS....so, i still dont get it
but i have never met him.......

Re: Karim Nagi
I don't know Mr. Nagi personally, but have taken four workshops at different times over the last two years. At each workshop, he is all business…meaning he is there to teach, and we students are there to listen and learn. He is also funny and extremely knowledgeable about what he presents. I've never seen him be anything other than professional. I respect you Cory as a person and extremely talented dancer, but your opinion is not my opinion about Karim.

Re: Karim Nagi
i do not have an opinion...i have never met him. i was relating problems my dancers had...i listed a couple.it really is no big deal...i was just scratching my head hearing what was told to me by those who have had experiance here.....it does not match what i have read on this thread..and i guess that is a good thing. he came here to teach a tribal group stuff we have done for years.

Re: Karim Nagi
you know ?. i did not want this to be any more than it was...but the "opinion" comment does not sit right....i was ASKING not stateing anything.if all of you have so much to say about him...... i thought we were here to inform, help each other.
i did not get it....i asked. how could i have an opinion about anything i have no done or known? my people were upset !
(i guess there is some sort of open floor segment to his shows...he goes around to EACH dancer and plays a little for them...so, why would he turn his back on the 2 from here last year?....all attending saw the "snub"....see?) i am lost!...how can i help my people from your knowledge if all i get is an opinion attack?....i dont get this man nor my treatment here.
but no biggie.....
BTW, the NICE dancer who retold of his treatment of a daughter....that perhaps is closer to what was dumped on me..thank you.i did not go back through this to recall your name..but thank you, nice is always nice!
ok, fine...if he comes back next year, i'll just tell all to avoid it if they felt this way the past 2 years..

Re: Karim Nagi
Try not to take anything here too personally. Karim has a lot of fans, and it's hard for them to think of him in a negative light. I do hear your concern. It's always a little disheartening to hear your students relay such stories. Truly, my guess is that it was a misunderstanding. Karim really is professional and his classes are fabulous. The cane class he taught here in Vegas was so popular that we're offering it again.

Re: Karim Nagi
I've found Karim to be an amazing teacher and a deep resource for information. He has made an impact on how I teach non-dance/music related things as well. I'm amazed by his ability to remember information about people, keep in touch and maintain professional relationships. I've also turned to him in a time of stress and found him to be very sympathetic. I don't enjoy everything he does but what I love I love.
Still, he is a man with a very clear sense of his culture, his knowledge, and his self. He is an individual. Like many such individuals, most of what he teaches is to teach...but some of what he teaches is perhaps to personally combat what he sees as mis-information or misrepresentation that he find personally offensive because it impinges on his sense of culture and education. He has strong views and they will not be universally shared. he can be polarizing at times, not unlike, say, Hadia. Like all human teachers he's going to have off times and is going to make missteps about how to interact with some students.
I personally think he's mellowed and changed as he's taught...but I get how someone could have a rough time of him and I get how someone could idolize him. I personally think he is worth looking into if he teaches near you.Last edited by ozma; 11-10-2010 at 06:57 PM.
