I'm a fan, too! Very impressive, with his wide range of versatile skills, and his ability to teach 3 different percussion instruments in a room full of vary mixed level students. Looking forward to his workshops at SaharaDance next month!

Re: Karim Nagi
I am hosting Karim on August 7 and 8 in Milwaukee; he will be here performing at Arab World Fest. Here is his workshop schedule; you can register on www.milwaukeebellydance.com, "Workshops". -- Shaia
On August 7 and 8, 2010, Shaia will host Arab musician, folk dancer, recording artist and educator Karim Nagi from Turbo Tabla for workshops at Astor Street Dance Studio, 1228 N Astor St, Milwaukee, WI.
Saturday, August 7, 11am to 1pm:
RHYTHM FOR DANCERS: It's time to raise the bar for rhythmic literacy! A dancer's immediate connection to the music is the rhythm produced by the Tabla and percussion. Karim teaches each rhythm using the three-sound clapping approach. Karim then performs sample rhythms on the Tabla. Students will learn each rhythm by name, "dum-tak" vocalization, and clapping. Afterwards the dancers will learn choreography segments to help gain bodily control with the sample rhythm, putting theory into practice. By physically personifying each Rhythm, bodily mastery of that rhythm will be achieved. This movement workshop is perfect for any dancer who wants to better understand what they are dancing to.
Sunday, August 8, 11am to 1pm:
ARAB FOLK DANCE INTENSIVE: This class is an intensive introduction to the traditional group dances from the Arab world. These dances are primarily unisex, and emphasize synchronicity and group cohesion. This workshop includes Dabka Line Dance, Basic Tahteeb/Assaya Cane Dance, and the group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices. Each dance is taught efficiently as an introduction to the style, and is an initiation into possible future study. These dances are less glamourous than the performance-oriented heroism of the solo dances found in the Arab world. These are the dances done by "The People" in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings. They can be taught to dancers at any level, as both a cultural and artistic experience. The group movements and concepts can later be extrapolated into performance-caliber skills and themes.
Workshops are $40 each or two for $75. Space is limited so reserve your place with payment to shaia@milwaukeebellydance.com at www.paypal.com

Re: Karim Nagi
I took his "drum solos for dancers and drummers", "Arab folk dance" and zil workshops when he was in Colorado over Valentine's weekend. Absolutely fantastic! We learned 3 complete choreographies in the folk dance workshop alone. My brain was so stuffed full of new information... He also sent class notes to those of us with emails on his list.

Re: Karim Nagi
Also a fan of Karim! I took a Dabke class a couple of years ago and he's so good at describing not just the steps but also the attitude. What really blew my mind was watching him perform - dance, drums, stick... and the sagat, oh the sagat, he's really quite amazingly talented.

Re: Karim Nagi
Oh cool! Great to hear good things about Karim. He is teaching drumming workshops in Texas at Ya Halla Ya'All in August and my husband is excited to take from him! I'm also thinking about taking his "Dancing with Zills to Live Drums" class there too....has anyone taken this with him before? Curious about the content... :-)

Re: Karim Nagi
*gasp* is this a new class? lol
Sounds amazing, and knowing Karim, it will be AMAZING.
He's really a super cool guy, so if you email him or message him on facebook, he'll get back to you about the content. :)
This is a description of his "regular" sagat class from his website:
KARIM NAGI / Arab Tradition Re-Imagined / Arabic Music, Dance & Culture / Percussionist , Folk Dancer , DJ, Composer
"Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques, and an Ambidextrous approach. He uses the Egyptian Sufi Zikr aesthetic with multiple sounds, open and closed, sizzle and rapid combinations. Students will learn the Arabic rhythms by name and how to play them while dancing! Dancers will learn to use the cymbals to communicate rhythms to a band and accent solo dancing and body movements. Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome. He will also teach dance combinations, solo patterns, train the dancer in musicality, and teach when-and-when-not to play within an Arabic song. Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his finger cymbal teaching approach."

Re: Karim Nagi
Oooo, that sounds AWESOME!
And look! they finally posted class descriptions on Yaa Halla Ya'All's site! http://www.isisandthestardancers.com...eaching_10.htm
Here's the description for Karim's zills with live drums class....
Dancing with Zills to Live Drums for Drummers & Dancers (Zill technique, movement, and drum solo): Karim teaches Egyptian Sagat (Zills) using multiple sounds per hand. The first hour will cover multiple sounds, 5 classic A'raj (gallop) patterns, rhythms and rolls. The zill patterns will be aligned with hip drop, travel and shimmy steps. Afterwards, the student will practice using the zills within an improvised live drum solo. They will learn to both lead and follow the drummer (Karim), plus call and response. They will also learn to to accent there body movements with zills, and become a "dancing percussionist".
YAY! I'm so excited! ..g.:

That really sounds fantastic...I'm going to have to facebook attack him now and BEG that he teach that next time he's in Vegas...or I'll just need to have a private for that one...
His private lessons are amazing, btw...I took one a couple years ago, and learned SO much! If he's available, I would highly recommend it. :)
(tell him I sent you...I should get credit for all the free advertising I do for this man! lol)

Re: Karim Nagi
He's coming to MN next month. Cassandra is having a big Jawaahir show, and she's bringing in the Georges Lammam Ensemble, Karim Nagy, and Nesma al- Andalus. Both Nesma and Karim are teaching workshops, as well as performing in the shows. Karim is teaching Musicality for Dancers, Drum Solos: Dancer-Drummer Communications, and Tabla. I'm taking 1 for sure- trying to see if I can come up with the money to take 2!
