I'm almost getting to the point where I'd like Rosey to lock this one. I'm not sure why they keep singling this thread out, but we'll just keep reporting them....

Before Rosey locks it, I'd just like to add this Fairouz clip which is I think, one of her best. It's not a dance scene and she isn't impersonating anyone. It's a scene from the film Yasmine where Fairouz plays the part of an orphaned girl who has had been working as a street performer. In this clip she finally locates her grandfather and her mother, who have both been searching for her for years. This scene shows just what an extraordinary actress this little girl was. Fairouz comes from a family of talented performers and her two sisters appeared in several films with her as well. Her sister Nelly is very well known and loved throughout the middle east for her Ramadan Fawazeer which she did for years. Their cousin is Lebleba is also a well known actress and dancer. They are Egyptians of Armenian heritage.

Fairouz certainly was impressive as an actress--any actress--but it's especially impressive that she was so young. She's got quite the range of emotions to cover in the "Yasmin" clip, and even the crying scene feels natural, which is hard for most kids to pull off.

I like this clip, too. I'm not sure I'd say it's her best dancing, but she brings such a lovely, organic playfulness to the scene that it still works.

I was thinking about posting that clip too, jessedan. She's really a triple threat!

She is still alive, is she not? I thought I read that but don't know how old the information was. I wish there was more information about her online. Maybe I should try searching in Arabic, but my Arabic isn't good enough to follow a whole article in any case.

By the way, does anyone know what film the second clip with Tahiya is from? The 'saidi' clip?

Aren't both of the Taheya clips from "Fairuz Hanem"? Elcinema only lists one movie that they're both in, and it's that one from 1951.

Both Elcinema and ar.wikipedia report that she's still alive, BTW. She turned 68 in March.

The saidi clip, the melaya leff clip and the clip with the homeless children are all from the same movie, Fairouz Hanem. Two of those above are my clips and detailed explanations can be found underneath each one. Here is the same 3rd clip from my channel where I've also included an explanation of what's going on in this scene.



There isn't too much information about Fairouz in english but there is certainly plenty in arabic. I have a fairly recent interview with Fairouz that that I translated to english for my facebook page and never uploaded it because it was too long. I'll try to dig it up in my files and post a link to it.

Fairouz didn't only dance raqs sharqi. She and her sisters were very gifted in other dance forms as well. Here's a clip of her at age 13 with her two sisters Mervat and Nelly. Fairouz is the one with the longer hair. Nelly was five years old in this clip.
