This choreography is ideal for a dramatic entrance to an “Egyptian Raqs Sharqi” performance piece. You will learn Mohamed’s acclaimed Egyptian technique and various classical combinations. Mohamed will give you many ideas for creative improvisation for you to utilize and personalize within your own dance performance. You will learn how to articulate movements using your whole body but with adding special emphasis on your hips, shoulders, and hands while engaging the essence of a unique Egyptian feeling. 2- “Shaabi – Cairo Street dancing”
“Shaabi” is a name for style of living, a style of dance, and a style of music. In Egyptian Arabic, the word Shaabi refers to the poorer, lower standard sections of the city of Cairo. The closest English equivalent to the word Shaabi would be "ghetto." The name came to characterize the style of music enjoyed in such neighborhoods. You will usually hear Shaabi music played everywhere throughout Cairo- in taxis and buses, in your favorite falafel shops, and lively street weddings. This style of music is somewhat rougher and more playful than the rest of Egyptian pop music. Truly, Shaabi is the music of the Egyptian people.

I've taken a weekend workshop with Mohamed Shahin and he was fantabulous! I also have three of his DVDs and three CDs and I can't say anything but wonderful things about him.

He's the master of dance and of instruction. All serious work when it comes to teaching, but all sweet and approachable when it comes to chat time.

OMGod, the man can do no wrong... everything was executed perfectly from description to movement to dance choreography!

BUY THEM, BUY THEM, BUY THEM!!!! You will not regret it.

I have moves that I can now pass on in class to my students! Small combinations that make dancing more interesting.

With all due respect to Mr. Shahin, he's a very good dancer and teacher, but he's not universally recognized as infallible. His sha'abi has been criticized for being far too clean and theatrical to be authentic, and his Khaleeji, of being a strongly Egyptianized interpretation of Gulf dance. There's nothing artistically wrong with dancing that way, but if you are teaching a stylized representation as opposed to a realistic one (regardless of how entertaining and well presented it may be), it is important that students are aware of this distinction.
