    It's fusion, people! ..l;,

No really, it's just not very good dancing in a not very professional costume...

I was once told very firmly that Kurds have NOTHING to do with bellydance!

Anyway, the strange titles you see on some YouTube clips... Don't believe everything you see there!

And we get back to semantics, again....belly dance? Middle Eastern? Perisan or Irani?

Wierd for me, but I loved the costume! Especialy the top and the layering of the skirt. The head piece doesn't suit me, but I liked the way it looked on her.

The caressing of the asstassle was just wrong.....

I think there should be a law against overdubbing random music over belly dance clips. Whatever the music is that's playing, it is definitely not the music she was originally dancing to. Without knowing what the original music was it's hard to tell a whole lot more about it. It could be some sort of special vignette, but it's hard to say. Maybe she just felt like wearing an eccentric hat?

As far as the dancer goes, this is Tanyeli, a pretty famous Turkish dancer. There are tons of other clips of her on youtube. Her dancing in this clip, despite the overdub, the long title of the clip, and the odd hat still looks pretty Turkish to me.

I think she was having a costume malfunction and the singer was trying to help her out.

That did look like a costume malfunction to me too. I just didnt like the ass tassel...fringe striped to it's essential element? Pin the tail on the dancer ...nope....didnt like that at all. For a fusion piece there was too little of the Persian element in it for me as well. A couple a head slides...a few arm movements at the end...nope....
I am putting together a Persian inspired costume for a BD contest next month..and it has a hat as well.

The hat won't look like the one on Tanyeli in this clip, right?

    Just kidding, anala!! ..l;,

I actually think the song is the original, but I could be wrong. And yes, the butt tassel is just wrong. So, Tanyeli is a famous Turkish dancer, huh? Is this really her?

No way that's the original music. Not only does it not match her dancing, it doesn't match the playing of the live musicians on the stage, it doesn't even have the same instruments. (Hope this doesn't sound argumentative, but I'm pretty much 100% sure of this- take a close look at the musicians and tell me do you actually hear any violin or cello?)

Oh and yes, I'm pretty sure it's Tanyeli.

I took another look at it, and you're right! Doesn't match... what was I thinking? ,r:; I saw another wonderful example of extreme dubbing and bad dancing on Youtube. I may post it. But I don't want to give my fellow bhuzzers eye sores! ..l;,

    Thanks Shems!!

Your gonna love this hat! Magenta velvet. It's just a frame of wire covered in velvet in an oblong shape that I found in a thrift store. I am pretty sure its from the 60s. I squeezed the wire to make a longer shape and tilted the hat forward so that the point is at the middle of my forehead and then put a simple gold and rhinestone brooch at that point. I sewed a sheer magenta and gold striped Indian chiffon scarf to the back of the hat, and passed it under my chin and pined it to the opposite temple. Big benefit...my neck is veiled and the chiffon lightly drapes across the top of my bosom... oo la la

That's really creative!! I'd really like to see your Persian costume when you're finished designing it. Sounds like you're a pro!!

Ok, old school Turkish dancers wore hats, usually a little more fez shaped, with scarves, and sometimes a shorter version of what she is wearing. I have some of my Mom's and mine from the 70-80's, I showed them to a Turkish dancer I work with, and she went nuts and made me loan them to her, because she said the dancers in Turkey wore them, especially if they were doing a little folklore, 9/8 piece in their show. So even though it looks odd to us, it's actually fine that she wears it, but they use to wear a vest over their bra with it.

Oh, now see, we did not know that (some of us). Thank you for your clarification, because it was definitely odd to some of us. I had no idea that was somewhat traditional of Turkish dancers. Could you post another example (other than mine, is what I mean) of Turkish dance like this? I really appreciate your response!

(But the tassels on the back of the skirt, is that a common trait also? ..c:: ..l;, )

I will search for some old video footage, I wish I had clips of my Turkish teacher, Princess Neyla, she was great!! We didn't record much back then since video camera's were rare and huge!

OK, I'm so glad someone figured out that it isn't the right music, and that there was a costume malfunction of some kind. I was like "WHY ARE THEY TOUCHING HER?!?!"

Other than that, it didn't freak me out too much. The dancing doesn't look bad to me (now that I know this wasn't her music). The costume -- well, Egyptian dancers I adore have worn way worse costumes. And... hate to admit it, but I'm kind of a fan of the hat.

I looked for some more videos of Tanyeli, and I found this.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLjQe3IwXkY]YouTube - Tanyeli @ Oryantal Star[/ame]

She comes out with a little hat again, but then she takes it off right away. I actually like her dancing. Don't know about all those "dancers" on the stairs. The second song is really trippy. It sounds like Turkish music with a didgeridoo.

I loved her first song, but I'm a big fan of Farid el Atrache. I also really like her costume.
