Can't decide what music to dance to
this fit into so many different categories that I just could not decide where to put it, so, since it's for a recital, I picked this one.
I'm dancing in a recital on May 3rd and have no idea what to dance to.
I want to use the opportunity to obtain a good clip of my dancing but for the life can't decide what song to dance to and haven't even narrowed down a style.
Any thoughts on what type of clip would be best on a website to market my dancing to the GP?- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
Well my first thought would be if it was to be marketed to the GP then pick a style easily recognizable as what they would expect it to be.
A veil, bedlah, orchestral, perhaps with some taqsim or a drum... an oriental routine?
Or do you want to show your personality to potential customers... a fun baladi or arabic pop song...?
Veils and sagat are cool but I would avoid cane or shamadan unless your are going specifically for a folky feel.

ok...lets retro fit this one. I would pick a song that had a dramatic tempo change so that the videographer could do a fade from happy upbeat dancer to sultry snakey fascination. 2 clips for the price of one and it shows your versatility. What costume - have you decided that? ? I have different song choices depending on the costume I will be wearing.

How long are you dancing for during your performance? Do you have a 5 minute set or a 10 minute set?

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
I agree, lots of changes or a couple of short pieces would be good.
What will be your goal with the video footage? Promoting yourself as a dancer for American parties? As a teacher? As a traveling workshop instructor?
The only thing I can think of that would cross all those boundaries might be a pop song and a drum solo?

And, what music do you love? What moves you? It is possible to be techniquely proficient, yet lacking soul if what you are dancing to and how you are dancing isn't really *you*.

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
This is a really good point. Twice now I've gone into hafla shows with the same goal in mind only to find that I look "flat" in the footage...rendering it pretty useless. Maybe this dancing-for-the-video approach will work better for you, but so far I've found that the best footage comes from dancing for the joy of dancing (and just happening to capture it on film).
So I'd pick something that just makes you smile and want to move!

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
Well, the song dictates what costume I will wear. I have a number of costume that would be great, and range from folkloric to very very classy. I just need to figure out what to dance to!
My teacher instructed me to NOT dance to anything that makes me feel pensive, as I have a hard time in any event looking anything less than severe
Sultry for me comes across as seriously p*ssed off ..l;,- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

If you mean the version of Ah Ya Zein on Soul of Cairo, it's very peppy, lends itself to zills/sagat, and I think it would be nice promo material because it's traditional and modern at the same time.

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
I'm home sick, so might as well update my posts...
I danced to oolooloo, in Samira's burgundy raqia dress, it had enough tempo changes to be interesting, I thought there was enough variety to showcase and it just made me happy.
I felt good about the performance, and I haven't seen the video yet to disprove it!
Thanks for all the advice, it was very helpful.
Anala, I keep meaning to take you up on your offer, but i can't figure out how to attach a music file to an email :-(- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

Re: Can't decide what music to dance to
Using the same method, while your email message is open, go to insert and then browse to the file that contains the music you wish to attach. The file must reside on your computer, not on a CD. Click on the music file that you wish to send and it should then show up as an attachment to the email, just as a photo attachment would look. It should not be inserted (like some people insert photos into the body of the message itself). This, of course, all depends on if you are using Outlook for managing your email. You could give it a try using my email address.
