Anyone ever studied with Selayma of Colorado?
Hello--I just found out that an instructor named Selayma (of Colorado) is moving to Sacramento and is teaching new dance classes at a Rec Center near my house starting in May.
I was wondering if anyone has taken with her and could shed any light on her style. I just wanted to have some more info before I sign up!
Thanks,
Mish Mish

Re: Anyone ever studied with Selayma of Colorado?
There used to be a dancer named Selayma in the Bay Area. I worked with her at the old El Morocco (it was Concord then, now in Pleasant Hill). She moved to Colorado--wonder if this is her!
I recall her being a good dancer and a nice person. At the El Morocco, along with being able to dance and entertain, we had to do standard five or seven part routines, had to play finger cymbals, and had to do sword. So she did all of that! :) It was pretty straightforward AmCab/vintage American Oriental, but that was not everyone who worked there's primary style with their troupes, teaching, or staged dancing. So she may have another focus, too. I never took classes with her (don't know if she was teaching then), so can't comment on that.
That was a long answer, but in general I would endorse her, and imagine she will be a great addition to your dance community.
P.S. Selayma, if you are reading this, hi! I was called Zakiyya then/there. ;)Last edited by Monica; 04-27-2008 at 03:04 PM. Reason: added a little P.S. to the person under discussion

Re: Anyone ever studied with Selayma of Colorado?
I found her tribe profile and I think she did live in CA before she moved to Colorado, so I think it's the same person. I have to admit I was a bit thrown off by some of her video clips because her style looks like pretty straight forward improv (which I like and I liked her dancing) but she had on flares and kind of tribal fusion hair, which threw me for a loop.
I think I am going to go check out the classes. They start May 6 and I will be out of school in late May for the summer so it's a good time to start.
