Thread: male student in st louis mo

i recieved an e mail this morning from a young man who wants to dance.i love teaching men, but he can not get a return call from anyone out there.
can you ladies advise me as to where to send him?
this is strange to me, thanks!

Has he consulted Shira's instructors directory?

I wonder who he's calling -- most of the instructors I know answer their phones most of the time! (except me, and I'm terrible about returning calls -- but he hasn't called me).

Aalim's has had a male dancer in the past, that might be a good place to start. Andrea of Simone's, Diana of Danse Orientale, Nisaa and I have all studied, to one degree or another, with Yousry Sharif and other male instructors, I wouldn't imagine he'd be running into prejudice there.

although.... we did have an 'incident' with a local male dancer a few years ago that might have left everyone a little jumpy.... hmmmm.....

And there was a second guy who was calling around who wanted to wear a skirt to class, etc. I'll be honest, I'm leery of having WOMEN in my classes who want to wear skirts and play dress-up instead of learning to dance -- and twice as leery of men. If this is THAT guy, he's going to run into some roadblocks if he doesn't focus on the dance instruction for a while before he starts worrying about what to wear.

But if he's NOT that guy, I don't mind helping him.

Cory, have him e-mail me (lauren at lotus-arts dot net) and tell me what area he's in and what style he's interested in learning (if he knows) and I'll see if I can hook him up.

Hmmm. I haven't gotten any phone messages from a potential male student. Cory, is this someone you used to teach who is moving? If not, I wonder why he would contact you.

I'd guess its because Cory has a male dancer's section on her site. I get queries like this also, from time to time. I point them to Shira's site; as well as one of my own, brief, articles on finding a "male friendly" instructor.

i am known for my love of teaching male dancers.a specialization so to speak.

I haven't gotten any inquiries lately from males. I did have a young man call me over a year ago, but he never signed up. I also had a transsexual contact me maybe within the past year as well, but she had a scheduling conflict and also never signed up.

I will say that I have heard from many new students (all female) that they have called any number of studios and never received return calls, so this doesn't surprise me a ton. But I try my best to return calls within one business day.

We made contact via e-mail, and he sounds legit. I've invited him to drop by class in a few weeks, so we'll see.

And I fully intend to drop into your class, as soon as you give me a go ahead :) Until then, I have a couple of dvds to start with, just trying to figure out how to make my hips move like that...

You'll most likely find that your pelvic area will need "loosening up" - us guys tend to be tight in that area. Don't be surprised if you don't get much range of motion at first. When I started, I couldn't do side-to-side hip movements worth a darn, and my chest was locked up too!

I'll also second what Ruta says - a live teacher is best. S/he can correct and help you once s/he sees how you move.
