    Looking for a sword

I'd like to get a sword, which is of course not so difficult to find. However, my problem is: the standard choices don't appeal to me. The Cas/Baladi swords are a bit too common and too heavy (I sold my Cas Iberia), I don't like the handle of the Saroyan sword, and the scimitars that e.g. Audrena and Moondance have are just not my taste at all. Yeah, I know, I am being difficult.

I'd like something that is more shaped like a sabre, ideally. I'd like a simple handle without a hand guard. It should be a bit lighter and well-balanced. I don't like the slippery chromed swords. I am OK with whatever color, it can look obviously like a prop or it can be sharp and a real weapon, and I don't need a scabart to be happy. Oh, yeah, and a good price would of course would be a plus ;-)

There was a wonderful artisan sword maker at Pennsic who offers balanced swords and I really, really liked his work - but I am afraid, well over $400 for the sword I liked, that is beyond my pain threshold.

Any hidden source for a difficult customer like me?

hmmm i suspect you're going to have to fork out the bucks to get what you want. Anything high quality and/or rare = $$$ just look at what we're spending on costumes these days.

Does the Pennsic guy do layby? I think you'd be enjoying the sword long after the pain of paying for it has worn off. But don't bet on it holding its resale value.

There are several types of swords pictured at :: Craft India Overseas :: on the accessories page. You have to register to view the site, it just involves giving an email address and a password to get in.

If you see a product you like, you fill out the product inquiry form and they will email you.

I have had good service from them, and the quality of their products is okay--not top quality, but the prices are reasonable. I have really enjoyed most of the things I've ordered, but I have never purchased a sword from them.

I use a kuhkri sword. It doesn't have a handle guard and does have an "oooo" factor, and is a real working sword/knife/thingie. See my pict. I got it at a fest 10 yrs ago when scimitars weren't being imported for a while. There are places online, or I've found short ones at Ren Faires also. Mine is about the same weight as a scimitar, heavier than my cavalry sword.

great thread - I'm looking for a sword as well. My prob is I have a smaller head and most swords are too big/heavy. What are some great sword vendors?

I have one of the lion head swords from Dahlal that I'd sell, if anyone is just wanting the basic sword with scabbard. It's curved but not too curvy, and not too heavy.

I can send you a pic tomorrow... it is goldish in color, the scabbard is scarlet and gold. Dahlal's website still has a photo, I'd bet. I'd take $35 plus shipping.

It's not notched, by the way.

    Re: Looking for a sword

I have a cas knock off, one like Dahlal sells and an authentic Saudi Foot soldier Scimitar. The Scimitar is the one I like best. (The cas knock off comes in close second but only for Ohhh factor.)

Unfortunately, I have to go to a Guns and Knives store to find my sword. The good news was that it only cost me about $12 if I remember correctly. It is well balanced. If I remember correctly, Margaret's favorite swords are also authentic. But a warning: make sure you dull them and knock the tips off. I have managed to have more than one pair if shoes damaged from the sword slipping off my head!

Yes I also need swords for my students as well. Who are the good vendors to get swords from? And like Nadira I also have a small head and find swords difficult to work with becuase they feel so heavy.

    Re: Looking for a sword

I got mine from Gypsythreads dot com. ( I hink that's the address) It's similar to the Cas Iberia sword, curved, extremely heavy and extremely sharp. It looks like a weapon. It actualliy is, it's battle certified. That's how I like it. I got about a year ago and definitely noticed the difference in the audience's reaction. Before it was like " oh wow, it's a sword, cool, I wonder if it's real". Now it's like " wow, that is real!! and it looks dangerous".
Even guys, who used to dismiss the idea, thinking it's not real, it's just a prop, now are impressed. Especially when after the show they talk to me and ask to touch it - they realize that it's heavy and handles well.

The funny thing is that it's sooo much easier to work with than my old sword - the heavier and curvier it is the easier it is to balance.

    Re: Looking for a sword

After checking all leads (thanks muchos!), fate intervened and somebody sold a Zenptah sword on Ebay: very, very beautiful and lighter, right down my alley - thanks to an accounting wrinkle, I had the extra funds to successfully bid on it. As soon as it arrives, I'll report back. Now I hope that this obscenely expensive toy will work out ...

Looks like Dahlal has new styles...was looking for the one that Ghazalla mentioned. The scimitar looks great!

Does anyone have one of these new ones yet? What do you think???

Hm, the Dalal scimitar looks exactly like the Kult of Athena Balady Sword, except that Kult of Athena is $40 cheaper:

    SW665 - Baladay Scimitar - $44.95

Well done!! ZenPtah are like hen's teeth, he just can't keep up with the demand and hardly anyone wants to sell theirs. You got lucky!! I love my ZenPtahs.
