Dancing on a dumbek?
Hail to all the more experienced dancers! I'd love to have more info on dancing on a dumbek: since I saw a photo of Dunyah on one I can't get the idea out of my mind! Do you use an old drum to do this? What size/type of drum? How in the world do you practice? What kind of dances do you do on one? We just had our multicultural fair here and I think it would be a kick in the pants to see the reactions of the GP next year if I could get in and do it. I'm so not ready to try glasses so I figure this is the next best thing. What other props do dancers balance on, if any?

Re: Dancing on a dumbek?
I use a dohoula, or "bass" dumbek, it's taller and wider (and heavier!) than a regular dumbek, but I think you could use a regular one, too.
I did a drum solo on it, first interacted with the drummer a little bit by playing the drum, then set it down while he did a drum roll, and got up there. That is the scariest part, but it's not bad, just practice it. I was going to have him give me a hand up, but found I didn't need it.
Now I want to learn how to "walk' the drum around.

Re: Dancing on a dumbek?
My student who does this just uses one of my older drums -- standard doumbek. :-) She's about 5'2" and maybe 100lbs soaking wet ...

I have a recurring dream where I'm stepping up to dance on a doumbek and the thing collapses and flattens like an old top hat ..l;,

Ha ha ha! Good one! We were cracking up in class the other night about canes---we have awesome Halloween stores here and they often carry bamboo canes. My teacher admonished, "Make sure they aren't the collapsing kind!" Great minds think alike....
Thank you so much for the info and videos....I combed youTube and ended up finding everything BUT dancers on top of drums. Bhuzzers come through for me once again!
