Re: Baladi dvds
I think I remember someone saying that Hadia was coming out with a baladi progression instructional dvd sometime soon. She is going to be down here in Florida in December for a workshop weekend and I will find out then.

I think Karavan Studios has a Baladi dvd. Maybe Shamira, too. Not quite sure if I'm remembering correctly.

Zarifa Said just sent me an email about that weekend, trying to entice me down. It sounds like it'll be great! Details are here: Belly dance workshop Global Dance Fest 2007.

It would be nice if you were able to come down for it. Libby puts on a nice workshop event and show and always brings in top-notch teachers. The Indian cultural center where she holds them at has a real stage with dressing rooms and not the usual risers with some drapes on the side.

Re: Baladi dvds
Yes, they usually do video the shows. I am still kicking myself that I had to miss Orit but it was bad timing. The tropical storm was passing through and roads were closed, just had major car repair $$, and my little doggie was diagnosed with lymphoma after a couple thousand dollars in diagnostic tests. I'm broke, but have been saving my pennies for this one since it may be my only chance to study with Hadia.

Oh, Sou -- I'm so sorry about all of that, most especially the doggie. We went through a battery of tests on our two older cats who were mysteriously ill all last summer: it was both expensive and nerve-wracking. I hope your pup is doing all right. It's so rough when they're sick, the poor beasties!

Re: Baladi dvds
If were asked what I would want in a baladi dvd, this is what I would say:
Talk about the structure of a baladi progression or baladi taqsim piece
Introduce the different insturment that can be used in the taqsim and work on combinations that well with each.
Acknowledging the tet
Baladi arm position

Re: Baladi dvds
If you want some meat and potatoes to work with, get yourself any one of Shareen el Safy's videos. Her Shik Shak Shok baladi dvd is good, but so are so many others. Also find the baladi taqsim threads here on Bhuz where Latifa introduced her course material on baladi and then work through it. No choreos--lots of exposure to the music, the emotion, interpretations, rootedness.
Latifa is right. Must be grounded. I've watched Fifi videos for hour after hour and even when she gets up on the balls of her feet she maintains that earthly contact. She uses the balls of her feet to strike the ground, dig in and push off rather than to elevate herself to airy heights.
The music, the music, the music.

Re: Baladi dvds
Here's my dumb question for the day: What is "tet"?

Re: Baladi dvds
Taj,
You know the call and response part of a baladi piece, right? The tet is where the drum picks up the pace and the melodic and percussive instruments are intertwining. The music breaks out. Or as Latifa so aptly described it, the music overtakes itself. It spills out into a structured abandon punctuated by strong accents. Its what the music is leading up to. When I said acknowledge the tet, I was thinking about that shift, that thing we were waiting for. I think of anticipation and then total joy.
Hope that makes sense.

Re: Baladi dvds
Hi gang,
I'm a little new to Bhuz, but I thought I ought to weigh in on this one! :-) My beledi dvd set is being edited as we speak... It covers full breakdown of the two main types of beledi, often referred to as awadi and tet, both with live musicians (musical focus) and in the dance studio with commercial recordings (technique focus and some more musical analysis). It is geared to help dancers develop healthy, grounded posture and technique, along with a selection of moves that suit each part of the beledi progression. There is so much material that the producer, World Dance New York, has decided to release it as a double dvd set, and I am guessing that it will be roughly 4-5 hours of material, including special drills to help train in repetition of different sections of the beledi to develop both vocabulary and improvisational skills. This topic is close to my heart, and i've been researching it for many years. The musicians and I put a lot of content into the project. The dvds will probably be available in January; I will be taking pre-orders on my website soon, so e-mail me at ranya@ranya.net if you want to be alerted to this! It helps support my work if you order them from me directly. :-) I also plan to host a "Beledi Bootcamp" weekend with live musicians here in New York City this coming year. I'm glad to see there is so much interest in this topic, and happy to have the opportunity to contribute to the body of educational work in our field this way.
happy dancing, all!
