I just wanted to bump this thread since I'll be doing a performance that includes a little bit of goblet dancing this coming weekend. I'll be on a raised stage, but the club is pretty dark (not as dark as my unlit hallway, though), so I came up with what I think is a pretty clever solution:

I love the little battery-operated tea lights.

Try this address, linda@lindagraves.com
Leyla has just semi retired from dancing, and is concentrating on her writing. If you don't have any luck, let me know and I'll try to help!

Wow, that's really a cool idea with electric candles! Otherwise, I guess your feet would get a bit hot ..g.:
I think it's important to somehow incorporate the glasses into the dance - because otherwise you could just as well simply stand in one place and do some taksim. That's what I find a bit boring about Salome's video. Do don't see her getting up and down the glasses, so the effect is lost.
I also turn around with my glasses to add a bit more variety.
Hm, I really need to experiment a bit....

Nah, real candles would go out pretty much right after you put the glasses over them! (Though it took me a while to remember that when I was brainstorming ideas)
What I still want to see is video of Tiffany from Rakkasah! I saw the picture of her on the Gilded Serpent, and I am in *awe*.

Well, you would have to ask her to put the video up - it's forbidden to film at Raks (and I agree with that) so there is only a video if she got hers from the official video guy.
I just checked out the picture and it has "don't try this at home" written all over it! *LOL*

Just wanted to resurrect this thread for a bit - I was at Ikea today and bought some goblets to experiment with. They are hand blown, no seams, and pretty heavy/solid. Here's a link -
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50030212
What's nice is that, since they are hand blown and each one is different, you can grab the ones that seem more sturdy or thick than others. (Which of course, I did, and went through about 100 glasses to find the best ones, much to my patient husband's amusement.)
Funny incident while I'm digging through the glasses - a woman asks my husband, "Are these for a gift?" "Oh, no, just for my wife to dance on." That woman will never ask a stranger a question again!

Was that Tiffany performance at Spring Caravan? She was onstage with a group when she did this at RakWest.

I totally spaced on your request Lucinia - apologies!
Here they are:

Nothing remarkable about them other than that they're MASSIVE as they have to support a 220+ pound guy. Got 'em from a restaurant suppy house on the 'net somewhere. They do have seams though - but I don't think they're going anywhere.

ok, i've got some questions!
to those who dance on rugs: do you just balance on the glasses, or are you able to move them about on the rug?
to those who dance on slidey surfaces: i tried out my goblets on a metal tray. in one of the videos posted, the dancer pivots with kind of a jerk, which scoots the glasses around. i tried very small jerk-scoots, and it made me really nervous. I looked at the rim of one of the glasses and it kind of scuffed them, which makes me think that's a good way to get fine chips and hairline cracks started.
for the record, I found some thick water goblets with no pressed seams at pier one - for $2 each! the stems are short and thick and the glass feels substantial.
the idea of really getting up on them and dancing freaks me out, though. but maybe that's the point, huh! :) methinks I might chicken out and try some heavy tumblers with nice straight sides, first. and keep looking for some sundae-style goblets.

i wish adriana wore a costume that showed her feet/ankles more so we had a better view of what she was doing technically on the goblets.

yes, she did a straddle sit where you lay on your tummy. In other words, sitting on the floor legs apart and laying down on your tummy flat against the floor. Its part of the level three qualifications. Infact I'm just inches away from doing it.... yeah! Been working on it all year.
here's a better pic... only your laying flat on your belly.
