Goblet dancing has been on my mind for some time, and as coincidence would have it, I ordered a set of suitable goblets just before Rakkasah - where I saw not only my very first goblet performance, but one that was impossibly difficult as well!
Anyways, does anyone know of any resources? A video would be GREAT, a website would be good. Personal anecdotes are welcomed as well.

I have an article on this topic on my website at: http://www.americanistan.com/id62.html
There are links to other resources, including a couple of video clips, though I haven't tested these links in awhile.
My first post on the new Bhuz!

Thanx Dunyah! I like the links, although I haven't explored them yet. I'm actually thinking of (long term) doing this with my Shemadan!

04-09-2007 04:23 PM #6I dance on goblets (glasses) I have a video somewhere I need to dig up.
THen figure out how to get it on dvd and get it on utube or whatever.
I barely figured out my ipod, i haven't tackled getting my vids up on u tube yet.
Anyhow, I HIGHLY recommend doing a private lesson with someone who does it.
I have tips for ya, but I gotta run right now.
the biggest tip for now is "mind over matter"
and "Make your energy and weight "lift up" and not grounded.
Hard to explain, but easy to show....
good luck

Can anyone give some tips on buying suitably strong goblets? A friend of a friend who does goblet dancing has apparently had some luck at IKEA. What should I look for in prospective goblets?
04-09-2007 05:45 PM #9Look for goblets that do not have seams, but they are very hard to find at the moment, due to manufacturing process. Make sure there are "no" cracks, even small minute ones, (which you always have to check for) I buy 6 so I always have 2 replacements.
My goblets are heavy glass ones with a nice strong stem and a nice base to rest your feet.
I found mine at Crate and Barrell.

Here's a video clip of UK bhuzzer Sara Shrapnell dancing on glasses:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-IPBMxKfII
Sara, like me, dances on really strong tumblers as opposed to goblets but the skills required are pretty much the same. When I first learnt 20 odd years ago I used what I think would be called sundae dishes. They look like goblets only they have a wider cup with thick stems and are very strong.

Thanks for posting Sara's video. It gave me some new ideas...
I liked the way she first made a show of the glasses before dancing on them.
I think I have to create a new glass dance number!

04-10-2007 09:18 AM #16I usually only do my goblets number at the folk festival here in boulder, and I always make a show to the crowd so they see that the glasses are real.
Anyone who wants to learn, I really do reiterate you should take a lesson with someone who does it, or at least have an experienced dancer in the room with you. the most dangerous part is getting up and down from them, that is where they can break and you can get hurt, don't want to scare anyone, but you must respect that you are dancing on glass with your bare feet!
Another tip I have is you must have good core strength and balance, take some yoga classes if you need to develop in that area.
good luck everyone!

Yes, I couldn't agree more! You really do need to have a strong sense of balance, and you should test the glasses out very carefully before you start using them.
I'm interested in what other people use to put the glasses on. I use a small tray with a low lip to it. This stops the glasses from slipping about too much, and of course it's something handy for my assistant to bring them in on.
04-10-2007 09:44 AM #19I have a really nice 3 x 2 oriental rug that I put them on. It keeps them from slipping, and because I do my glasses dance at the folk festival, which is outdoors on a wooden dance stage, it's the best thing. I make a big show of calling my assistant in to put down the small rug and showing the audience the glasses, etc.

goblet dancing
The second Youtube video reminds me of Charmaine -- a Chicago based dancer (and an early instructor of mine) in the 60s-80s. I uploaded a photo of her dancing on what look like tumblers, rather than glasses, from the latter 1970s. Tried to insert it, but can't figure out how..c:: -- so here's a link! LOL

Thanks! I've found this thread very interesting.
I'd never seen dancing *on* the glasses before, but had seen lots of the "showing the audience the glasses" moves from Sara's video, nor did I have any idea you could use normal glasses!
I'm inspired! ..g.: Too bad I don't think anyone local does the on the glasses stuff.

I've never seen them, but I understand both Veda Sereem and Leyla Hazine both have instructional videos on goblet dancing. A google search should find them!
All the best,
Nikki

Something else that has just occurred to me - think carefully about where you will perform it. The audience needs to be able to see what you are doing, so a raised dance area or stage is a good idea. Otherwise people further back will not know what you are doing and therefore the impact is lost.

You're very welcome!
I looked at my bookmarks and found Leyla's website address... http://ssbellydance.tripod.com/id3.html
She does, as I thought have a video...it's called "Desert Orchid". I do have a couple of her other videos (not the goblet one), which I haven't watched for a long time...I know she makes them herself, and I think she packed a lot into her "moves" video, but I can't remember anymore about them.
The prices look good,
Package: Video, Notes, Practice CD $20 each
Video Only $15 each (3 or more $12.50 each)
All the best!
Nikki
