    Nubian and/or Khaleegy in Cairo

I would love to learn both Nubian and Khaleegy. As there are no instructors around who teach these styles, I would like to take classes next time I go to Egypt.

I already had khaleegy classes with Liza Laziza, and I will certainly take more. But for Nubian I have no idea who to contact in Cairo, and I am open to other ideas for Khaleegy.

    Who would Bhuzzers recommend ?

For Khaligi- Khaled Mahmoud. If you can't see him in Cairo, come over here to Congress or to JoY.

For Nubian, any of the Reda teachers. Or talk to Yasmina, she knows some great Nubian dancers, maybe she can put you in touch with someone.

For Nubian I would heartly suggest Ousama Emam from Kaoumeya troupe.
I had 3 choreo's for Nubian songs with him, he is just fantastic.

For Khalegee, Liza Laziza is already mentioned, I could say Nasra Emam, and also had fantastic lesson for khalege with Dandash !!

Hamada Hossam teaches Nubian choreography based on Nubian-flavored pop music by artists like Mohammed Mounir. He was one of the original Reda Troupe members.

But his style is definitely pop-oriented, so you wouldn't get puire folkloric from him. I don't have contact info for him - maybe someone else can help you with that? Also, he speaks almost no English. That wasn't a problem in the workshops I took because he's good at demonstrating, but you might need help making the initial contact, negotiating the price, getting directions on where to meet him, etc.

For Nubian, you could contact Atef Farag, also a long time Reda troupe member, whose English it very good. His wife Magda, also a long time Reda troupe member, teaches folklore, sharqi, Andalusian. I have their phone numbers - PM me if you want them.

Dr. Hassan Khalil taught us a delightful Nubian choreo to "Shamandura" by Mohammed Mounir at our teacher training session last month in Cairo. So much fun! Whether you want to learn classical Oriental or any of the folkloric dance styles, I highly recommend Dr. Khalil for his expertise and inspirational teaching:

I also teach and perform khalegy. I have been performing in Arab countries and during those trips I have learned a lot about the Arab feeling.

For Nubian, and all kinds of folklore really, I can highly recommend Ahmed Refaat: Ahmed Refaat Home. He has been training with several folkloric groups so he really knows the traditional stuff, but he`s also very creative and is thus able to put his own, "fresh" twist on the traditional steps, if you want something a bit different.

For khaligi (and oriental and balady) I really like Amany (the Egyptian, not the Lebanese). A lot of people don`t know about her, but she used to dance in Marriot and Semiramis until about 5 years ago, then quit dancing to study business administration. She learned khaligi from the "natives", so she has really captured that "arab" feeling. She nearly fainted when she saw MY khaligi, apparantly I`m terribly old fashioned ..l;,

Both Ahmed and Amany are among my absolute favourite teachers, both speak really good English, and they are very good at actual teaching and breaking stuff down, not the typical "follow the bouncing butt" teacher. For contact info for Amany, please feel free to contact me at snarfen at hotmail com, I`ll stay in Cairo for the next 6 months at least so I`m free to help you out!

Oh, and as Shira mentioned, Hamada Hossam is just a lovely man. His English is not that good, but he gets across what he means. You might be able to contact him through other teachers, but be aware that they might charge you a commission, whether they tell you or not
