What folkloric style would you like to learn?

If you are going to a "festival" which is offering different styles of dance and are not so keen on "oriental", "oriental", "oriental", "drum solo", and more "oriental" . . . what folkloric styling would you be interested in taking?

Why am I asking this question?? well, there is the possibility that khadejah ( Middle Eastern Belly Dance Performers and Instructors: Ahlam Dance Theater- Repertoire... ) will be coming to Ahlan Cairo Nights in July. She teaches a wide variety of folkloric dances along with the oriental, beledi, Khaleegy, Melaya.

So Dee Dee was asking me about what I would recommend since I have been to a workshop with Khadeja. I mentioned the Tunisian, which was one of the styles taught in Gainesville amongst many others.

Anything else in her folkloric repertoire that would entice someone to come to Dallas for ACN??

There will still be plenty of Oriental with Aida Nour, Lubna (although I think she'll be doing some folklore/saidi) and Asmahan, lol!

I'd go with Andulsian Moushahat, Zindali, Fellahin, or Nubian.

I haven't seen those offered, and the brief descriptions sound interesting.

First of all, hi Catherine - fun to visit with you at ACL in August 08!

As to folkloric workshops, I'd be interested in Tunisian, Ghawazee, Khaleegi. I'd say Melaya also but that's not strictly speaking "folkloric" although lots of fun!!!

Hope to be there in August; honestly depends on work situation (meaning I'm still looking for a job since October!)

Well, looks like most replies are for Khaleegy, Nubian or Tunisian . . . it is a start and there are so many different options and it makes it hard to choose.

Now that I've been immersed in Sahra's Journey Through Egypt all week, how about the women's dances of the Siwa oasis?

Has anybody from the dance community even seen this? As far as I know there is no footage at all (the women refused to be filmed/photographed) and even the dancers/researchers that have been to Siwa have yet to see women dance (only the men's "booty" dance, which is awesome ..g.:).

Right. I was being a brat. Though it would be cool if someone who DID know about this stuff came forward to teach it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: What folkloric style would you like to learn?

Aida Nour taught a group dance during this latest go round of workshops in Chicago and San Franciso area . . . she said it was from Siwa Oasis . . . lots of jumping around. It was a lot of fun but I didn't get any of that on video. I think it might have been an old Mahmoud Reda choreography that Aida had learned while she was with the troupe. . . but now that I am thinking more about this it might have been a choreography that she worked up and taught to a group of dancers in Europe for performance . . . the brain is foggy.

The Siwa style isn't listed as one of the folkloric styles that Khadejah teaches and that was sort of what I was asking about.
