    "freeze" shimmies

    Hi all,

I am having a heck of a time developing "freeze" shimmies (by which I mean the trembling vibration you get when you overtighten a muscle). Every once in a while I can do one, but my muscles have to be significantly tired to produce it. I certainly can't call one up at will.

Do you have any particular techniques that help you produce a freeze shimmy? I'm more interested in the freeze from the quads, but glute advice would be great too.

    Thanks!

I do freeze shimmies two different ways. One way is to tighten the glutes, bend your legs slightly and move both legs (mostly the quads) front and back very quickly and in a small tight movement. It's very important to tighten your glutes otherwise the movement will travel upwards to your face and get lost. With tight glutes it stays at the hips and you don't lose the vibration. You can do it on one leg, alternating sides or on both legs, keeping the legs close together. I find this one a bit more difficult.
The other way is to move your hips (not your knees) side to side in a very small tight movment. Your quads are also engaged in this version. Again, you can practice it on one leg, then the other, then both. I find this one a bit easier to do and to sustain.
But both freezes look very similar. The first one gives you more of an up and down freeze, and the second one gives you a side to side freeze.

Edited to add: I forgot to say that in the first version, both legs move back and forth together at the same time, not alternately as in a regular shimmy.

    Regards
    Priscilla

I think I tend to tighten my quads quite low down - just above my knees. That keeps the knees from moving too much and produces a much smaller shimmy
