I am having a hard time doing these. I know to practice isolating my upper and lower abs, and my body just wont cooperate. Okay so I have been trying to do these for not even a day, will it get better with practice or is it something that you either get or dont get?
I have been doing pelvic locks that I was told would help eventually. I have also practice just tightening my lower abs and releasing slowly a while, doing upper abs, laying down on my backs works great. As soon as I get upet, I cant separate the muscles. Any tips?

Sometimes it helps to lay your hands on the upper and lower part of your belly so you can feel the muscles better.
Oh and of course we have not only 2 but several rows of muscles, to make things worse ,r:;

I think Jahbie was referring to the link (the 6pack picture) rather than placing hands on belly.

Some people get it right away and have been rolling their bellies since childhood. The rest of us have to work, work, work but we *can* be taught.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I had to play around with my abs for weeks before I could get even a weak belly roll, but I got it! I practiced upper abs in, out, in out -- slow then faster. Then I did the same with my lower abs (much harder!) Then I tried uppers in, lowers in, uppers out, lowers out. In, in, out, out... that's a roll!
Another thing that *really* helped was learning to make my undulations more muscular, less skeletal, and focusing on exaggerating the abdominal movement during the undulation. Then, gradually decreasing the skeletal involvement until it's JUST an ab isolation. That's also a roll!
Keep at it, you can get there.

Great! I'll keep practicing! I am definitely not one of those that were able to roll as a child :P

Practice sitting down, in the car or at work! It helps isolate the muscles, I swear. I can do a belly roll much more dramatically when sitting...maybe it's just me because nobody has ever given me this advice; I discovered it on my own

I've heard talk that the ability to belly roll has a hereditary component, much like the ability to make a "taco-toungue" (if you'll excuse the comparison). No clue if it's true!
The trick that helped me on the road to mastering belly rolls is to lay down face up with a small book on your upper abs and one on the lower, and alternate them going up and down. Then smooth it out...and tah dah! ..g.:

Definitely true in my experience:
My brothers and I could all bellyroll easily when we were kids.
Both my sons can roll and isolate their abs without any difficulty, and my youngest is 2.
My husband is completely mystified by it as he is virtually unable to isolate his abdominals at all. -Not that he particularly wants to!
I'm sure it is learnable for anybody with a bit of with time and determination though.

My mom has been teaching belly rolls while seated for nearly 40 years -- it is much easier than trying to learn them while standing!
I'm not an anatomist or anything, but I've tried to determine why seated is easier and I've decided (rightly or wrongly!) that the torso (the entire torso: shoulder to hip) is less engaged when seated as compared to standing; in other words, when seated, your back and abs are not as busy keeping you upright and balanced on your feet and are a bit more relaxed and "free" to move.
Perhaps our resident anatomy experts can chime in here? ..g.:

Especially men, for some reason. My ex could do the most extraordinary ones, though his were technically *waves* rather than rolls. I've never mastered either - I keep telling myself it's because I like Egyptian style best but really it's just because they're hard. Some people get it right away and have been rolling their bellies since childhood.
