Lotus Hands
I have always had a difficult time with learning how to do this. I need a lot of practice with this movement and I'm looking for a DVD with a good breakdown.
I've had a couple teachers teach it, but we never spend enough time in class or spend more than one class reviewing it, so it never sticks.
Can anyone recommend a DVD that has this on it? I got the Beautiful Hands and Arms DVD thinking it might be on there, but it wasn't ,f::

This was a topic of discussion a while back. You might want to check out this thread for some pointers.

Re: Lotus Hands
I am trying to learn this too. My teacher says try to make each hand go in a fig 8 opposite of each other and the palms never face down.
Also pretend you are wearing handcuffs. I have been working in it and can get one or two rotations then it all goes to heck.

Re: Lotus Hands
That's an excellent description. I can do them but I have a mother of a time trying to break them down for people. My teacher says try to make each hand go in a fig 8 opposite of each other and the palms never face down.

- A (starting position): cross your wrists in front of you, right over left (left hand is facing down, right one is facing up)
- B: without losing wrist-to-wrist contact, switch your hands so left is over right (left hand is facing up, right one is facing down)
- C: the tricky part: turn both thumbs downward (think: elbows out) until the backs of your wrists are touching. this means your palms will be facing away from each other in the end (left one to the left, right one to the right)
- D: roll the left wrist(arm) under the the right one until you get back to the starting position
Re: Lotus Hands
Love the figure 8 description! A tip my teacher once gave me is to remember to keep your fingers pointing away from you at all times, so no hand flips.
I break the move down into sections when I teach it to students. Works much better with visuals but here goes:

Re: Lotus Hands
Khalida,
I'm not sure what you mean. If your hand is moving in a figure eight pattern, won't your fingers at some point be kind of facing you? Could you explain a little more? please please ..g.:Last edited by Alyssa Springs; 03-11-2009 at 09:31 AM.

Re: Lotus Hands
I am not sure if this will help, but I made it for some of my students who do better with graphic and written instructions to get the concept behind the movement -

Re: Lotus Hands
What do people generally do with their fingers? I've read some people keep their hands kind of cupped, but I've also learned a way with bringing the fingers in and out with the movement (picture wrist circles in- you start with the pinky finger and curl them in). I don't think I explained it very well, but does anyone do them that way?

Re: Lotus Hands
Keti Sharif explains lotus hands on her "AstroBelly" DVD. Although right now I can't recall exactly which sign it is, maybe Scorpio?

Re: Lotus Hands
Hi Alyssa,
It's more like drawing a figure eight on an imaginary mirror before you, so the fingertips are always facing away from you.. Hope that clarifies ..g.:
As for the fingers: I teach them with fingers cupped while the insides of the wrist are touching and fingers stretched (not sure how to explain this? extended but still together? argh my bad english!) when the outsides of the wrists are touching. Kind of feels like a hand undulation when the move is 'flowing'. Or somesuch .w.:Last edited by Khalida; 03-11-2009 at 06:38 PM.

Re: Lotus Hands
Ah, now I get everything you're saying!
I practiced yesterday with all the advice and videos from here and I think I finally have it down! I showed my husband when he got home from work and his face lit up because he said it looked pretty. He knew it was something I wanted to do, but was having a hard time with. Thanks everyone for all your help!

Re: Lotus Hands
This is another clip I have been studying. It's helpful because she describes what to do: (I am left handed and I blame that for my spazziness at this ;P)
