studio owners- how do you charge teachers to teach private lessons?
I am not sure if this post belongs here or in the "business of belly dance" section.
First, thank you to all who helped me with my last problem of the class percentage rates and insurance questions.
Again, this is a brand new home studio and studio owner. I am the first instructor there to get private lesson requests. I have my set fee already, but the studio owner is not sure how much to charge me for the rental space.
Do you charge the same % fee as the regular group classes, a smaller percentage or flat fee?
Thanks again!Last edited by crystalllized; 03-16-2009 at 06:33 PM. Reason: title is confusing

Re: studio owners - how do you charge private lessons?
As a studio owner I do charge less for people who are renting for private lesson or rehearsal time than for classes. This is because (1) classes are held at prime rental times and privates/rehearsals at off-times, and (2) because I help to advertise the classes with flyers, class schedules, and a website.
For my studio the general class time rental rate is $20, the private lesson/rehearsal rate is $15.

Re: studio owners- how do you charge teachers to teach private lessons?
I do charge teachers differently to use the studio, depending on the purpose, but mainly because I offer "extras" for class & workshop rentals: I make an effort to help market a class--I maintain a website and add updates, I add class descriptions to a flyer about the studio, etc. Angela, you might ask your studio owner if they will rent to you for a reduced rate in off-peak time. Many that I have worked with will do this. I do, because there are hours that will otherwise go unused. Some studio owners will let their regular teachers have a free extra hour here and there for their own practice time, if you are a good renter who pays on time and all that. Others might be willilng to offer a bulk-hours discount. Doesn't hurt to ask!

I offer teachers a discounted rental rate regardless of what they are doing with it, as a "perk" for teaching at the studio. They arrange their own private classes and I do no admin or promotion (other than facilitating contacts) so it works out for everyone.
