Thread: How many dances does a troupe come up in a year?

I was just wondering if troupes set a specific number of dances that they should come up in year.

so far our troupe has learned 8 this year ( well our year started last Sept) ...not all of us are dancing in each one.. not all were bellydance...but some hula and Tahitian for our Valentines Show we had

4...I wish! A mixed funzie troupe - one per quarter would thrill me.

It depends on how many events and different kinds of event they are dancing at in the year.

Back in the day when I was in a troupe, we choreographed group numbers for specific events, we had three or four regular annual gigs, where we couldn't ever repeat choreos. So that usually meant about 3 or 4 new group routines per year. We added in personal solos/duets when we needed to put together more of a formal set. We weren't "big-time" so we weren't all that busy and that was enough for our needs.

Thank you. We are a small group and we don't have a lot of shows but I was just wondering about the number of dances. I think we are slacking off lately. hahahaha but it is ok. I like the idea of doing at least one per quarter.

That's about the schedule of my student troupe.

the entire school has 12 for our upcoming gala...whew I am tired

Well, the question is great, but it's subject to what type of troupe and what level of troupe.

I mean, BDSS learn a whole new show in a week....

Our EDA DC learn 1 complicated longer feature choreography and various smaller choreographies each year (this academic year it's 4). Each dancer has each their solo(s) additionally. We present it all at our annual Expose - this year on May 31st in San Diego. The material is also used by the DC and dancers at various performances and events we're featued at. What's mentioned so far is all choreographed, coached and drilled by yours truely with the dancers. The other show event we do usually is in December and the dancers feature their own material there - none of my choreographies are even allowed to come close to that show LOL. That's the students' time to bring their creativity and joy of dance forth.

Now, a side note - as the instructor and coach of our academy I produce between 10 and 40 choreographies through an academic year... excluded what I do for myself...

(and in my sparetime, I'm an astro-cario-retnal surgeon, right?? LOL)

DaVid, you and I are neck and neck -- I do about 30 choreographies a year. I think this year it's going to be more!

I have a student performance group not really a troupe. We do about two new per year for them and then the other classes do maybe two new.
Since my students meet once per week I want to make sure all number are well done so we take time on each!
I guess it depends on how many times you meet per week? My ladies are studnets wanting to have fun and perform here and there so I don't feel crazy pressure to produce large numbers of dances. If I had dancers who were pro or pre pro that would be different. My head does much more than I can fit into our once per week session!

I had a trio of students for 3-4 years who performed once or twice annually. We learned one or two choreos per year, starting mid-September thru the end of March. If we danced again later in the year, we practiced again, but didn't add to the number of choreos. As are Faaria's students, mine were just wanting a challenge and fun so there was "no crazy pressure to produce a large number of dances."

So, yeah, the purpose of the group's dancing really is the determining factor.

Because I have a big turnover in my school (expats coming and leaving) I teach 2 new choreos every month. 1 oriental and 1 tribal.

Plus there are skeleton choreographies and my students can improvise.
