Thread: Good songs or albums for a troupe dance

I am putting together my first student troupe and I am having one heck of a time finding music. I like classical ME music and I find that the songs are either too long or too complex for my students.

I want something pop-ish but no vocals. I want something about 3:30 minutes long. I like Tribal Dream by Issam Houshan, but its a hair on the long side--so I want something along those lines.

Any suggestions?

A lot of teachers use Eddie Kochak as their go-to music. He has a lot of short, traditional-sounding songs, but there have been some issues about licensing with regard to his recordings, so if you like his sound, you may have to follow up on that before you use anything for performances. For a while, the word on the street was that dancers weren't supposed to be teaching or performing to his music without formally paying royalties. Does anyone know what the current status is as far as performing to Eddie's records?

My daughter just discovered that you can remove vocals from a piece of music! Good thing as I like some music but do not want the vocals!

Harem from BDSS 3 is along those lines, and clocks in at 3:33. I use it as a warm up for my Level 2 class, and have been able to pair some basic movement vocabulary with it.

Anything from the BDSS series is probably a good place to start. I think the "Arabia Now" series has some good stuff on it.
