Thread: My fun group

I teach a group of students that have a core group that has been with me for 5 years with a smattering of newer students; I guess they'd come out as advanced Intermediates. Over the years I've taught them routines for our haflis that include 9/8, veil, pharonics/cifti,Turkish Rom, cane, candles-well, we've done a lot! (I'm old school AmCab or American Classic or whatever we're calling it, so it's all part of my background)

A few weeks ago, a couple of them said to me, "We've just discovered a big gap in our knowledge. We've never done classical Egyptian! We should do that next". So, I agreed to brush off my own knowledge and start working on it the next week. In the meantime, I was playing with some newer music and one of the songs that came up was from Beirut Underground-a rather techno version of Ayazein. Ooooh, they all decided, could they do that instead? OK, I said, but the other gap in their knowledge was the ability to break down musicifor choreo so we'd write a routine together as an assignment.

Last evening we started work. Before the session was over they had added in poses from Charlie's Angels and glow sticks. When I got done laughing, I asked what had happened to classical Egyptian. The answer: WE EVOLVED!

I'm fascinated about how this turns out. BTW, anyone know an Arabic translation for Charlie's Angels?

I'd love to, but (you knew there was a but didn't you?) I'm having a bone spur scraped off my foot Friday and need to take 2 weeks off. So they are, too!

I will, however, encourage them to continue without me!
