Next advance for instruction - the Wii
Does anyone else see that it could be really fun & instructional to move from DVD instruction to a Wii-style? BDWii! Not only could you see the instruction, but it would be great to be able to learn by mimicking the movements (or whatever) and get instant feedback through a sensor system that would detect how you move and how it differed from the instruction.
Not as good as real live instruction, but it could be great for drilling. Maybe it would be supplied with a bedlah that would record your moves - or maybe a whole sensor suit....
I could totally see it for learning zills.

That is great!
Did you know that XBOX 360 is coming out with something similar to the Wii? That would be great for XBOX users, since we have this instead of the Wii.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
I
my Wii. I left it at home and I miss it. ..cr.: I can imagine the snash it's going to give me when I get home: "Where have you been, Jen? It's been 378 days since your last training session". Little electronic dude makes me feel so guilty... ..l;,
BD Wii (BiiDii?) would be awesome!!! Even as a little add on. Hipcircles could easily be built on the Hula Hoop style thing, giving you the little drawing of how round your circles are. And Wii zills.... what a good idea!
You should write to Nintendo and get that patented.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
In order to make this happen, all it needs are connections to a CS department. Instructors are always looking for ideas for cool projects, and this could be a great term project for e.g. an interface design class (and this looks like the ideal problem for such a course because it requires a non-standard interface, and working out the specs from observation). This may require a firm time commitment and a well-specified proposal, though.
Hm, I should chat with my husband and his students, one of them is interested in ME dance.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
Thank you thank you all for liking my idea.
The next level of advancement would be that you could upload images of yourself and then model costumes while you practice. You could really see whether the cossie looks good or awful.
Dang, I want to do that with everything I order -- an interactive fashion catalog.........Victoria's Secret here I come.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
at this point, it's really gonna be a race to see which belly dancer patents It first, whatever incarnation of a belly dance Wii Fit "It" will end up being, cuz I've totally had this discussion after dance class as well, and of COURSE it was the 1st thing to pop into my mind when I started the balance training exercises!
"ah man...I'm s'posed to stand so still and not move the dot, but with my feet planted like this, I just wanna see what the dot would do if I were maya-ing/back 8'ing!"

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
Is that Veena and Neena or a different set of twins? I can't tell for some reason. Usually I thought Veena and Neena spoke in their videos and didn't have voice overs... but then again I don't really watch them so maybe I've forgotten.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
Did I miss something? That looks like a instruction DVD (I admit I left the sound off); I was thinking of a system that would translate your actual movements to something on the screen and then 'shape' and drill your technique to what it 'should' look like.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
That's exactly the bit I thought was most useful for us, to see where your actual centre of gravity is and be made to correct! I also wondered if it would help beginners to shoulder shimmy without moving the rest of their body.
And for drills, the little Wii Fit can tell which side your weight is on, so it can provide some music (or even just a count, like the freestyle Step thing) for you to practise 8's and undulations in differing timescales... work in some quick repetitions and then some sloooow, back to quick and you're onto a good fat burner there too!
Seriously, I hope someone's working on this. I would sooooooooo buy it. ..g.:

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
Yes! It would be soooooooooooooo cool. In my imaginary Wii world - it could monitor your posture too -- everything you did would show up on-screen (or recorded so you could playback). Of course, I'm still waiting for the STNG Holodeck.

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
I totally agree, I had just typed in Bellydance for Wii (or something like that) and it came up with that veena and neena video titled Wii Bellydance with a thing asking anyone interested to visit the website. I dunno..
I would like it better if it worked like the hula hoop thing or that Japanese hula dance one someone mentioned (they have a commercial for it on youtube somewhere)

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
if it were created properly, is it too much to wish for the idea that it might be able to keep a possible baby belly dancer from hurting her lower back??
i'd also like a wii unicorn I could ride, for that matter, hah, but still ! I think it might be possible!

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
I think it could - if it combined showing the little instructor animation in profile softening the knees and tucking in the pelvis, while showing (maybe in a split-screen stylee) the little red centre of gravity dot and making her try to keep it in the centre.... there's your very first exercise before building in actualy movements.
Then it should be the same as the other Wii Fit exercises - you can't get access to certain movements until you've spent X amount of time on the preceding basic (or once you receive a satisfactory score).
I am geekily over-excited by the mere prospect! ..l;,

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
There are so many ways it could help technique, especially if you're like me and you start out ok, but start to drift into bad posture, chicken wings, etc. And if there was some playback - you could do spins, hair flipping, floorwork ,etc - which are hard to do AND keep an eye on yourself at the same time.
And I still like the idea of play testing costumes. Oops? Is that what my butt looks like in these pants? Oh gods, that green makes me look leprous!

Re: Next advance for instruction - the Wii
So you're suggesting a DDR/WiiFit game? :D I have always wanted to try DDR and not be a total maroon!!! If it were bellydance related I could win every time!!! Plus, I am really heavy on my feet when I dance and I would definitely break the poor WiiFit.
One thing I would think would take some tweeking in the construction of the program would be how large the move was on different people. If you're a thinner gal you probably aren't going to do the moves near as big as I would. And would it leave room for adding in new moves? You create the new move then you add it to your drills workout?

I hope someone from one of these large corporations is reading this. I don't own a Wii fit or any other game thing but I would buy for something like this!
