    Oriental for tribal students

I was approached tonight at a party & asked about teaching an Oriental workshop to tribal students. It would basically be a Saturday workshop to introduce tribal students to Oriental or classical style (Egyptian) dance.
Has anyone done this? What did you teach?
    Thanks!

what a fantastic idea! when i get new students who are trained primarily in tribal formats, i start with the breakdown of oriental posture, then start them on the movements that are most similar in both genres. then move them to the purely oriental movements. it helps their brains and muscle memories make a graceful transition to the new-to-them genre of oriental.

    have a great workshop!

I have :) In general, I explain and work on the posture differences for ATS/ITS, Egyptian Folkloric, Egyptian Raqs Sharqi, Turkish, and Lebanese. Once we cover the differences in basic posture, I work a little with the differences in music and then move on to doing a compare and contrast set of movements and combinations with each type of technique. If you want to chat about it, just let me know - it's a fun topic to teach :)

I also teach a workshop on Orientale for the Tribal dancer/Tribal for the Orientale dancer. I approach it from a comparative dance perspective (as Mahsati described), and also teach movements or combos from both styles to try and help students see how cross-training in the other form (regardless of whether you perform in it) can help enrich and enhance your dancing and your understanding/appreciation of different forms. :)

    Re: Oriental for tribal students

I am an oriental dancer that will take a tribal class every now and then to learn the differences between the styles. I think it is important and I do get students who learn tribal as well so I want to know where they are coming from. I agree, I think it is important to understand the different styles whether or not you actually perform or teach them.
