Several, actually. I tend to sing along (quietly), as well. Probably a nightmare for someone with perfect pitch ..l;,

Sorry to go off topic - but this reminds me of an interesting moment.
I was attending a funeral in the family and as I was making my quiet exit - my cousin hollers out "See ya later Hummer Girl!". Sure got some interesting looks and when she realized what she had said she turned so red.Last edited by Surida; 10-21-2009 at 02:41 PM.

So funny you mention this because I had not one, but TWO in my last session!!! It is a LARGE class in a big studio...and I kept hearing off-key HUMMING and thought that my iPod was going wonky...turned out to be two different students...and...btw...they didn't know the melody...

Re: anyone else got a "hummer" in class ?
Can't stop myself from humming or singing - it's an awfully hard habit to break. I don't know I'm doing it but it shows up when I videotape myself. Luckily in performances, the music drowns me out.

Re: anyone else got a "hummer" in class ?
Wait, let me get the quote from the article about Lebanese male belly dancer Alexandre Paulikevitch that was posted last week:
As he became increasingly out of breath from his oscillatory exertions, Paulikevitch began to use breath as a percussive instrument in its own right. Punchy pendulations of the hips were punctuated by sharp exhalations. Soon this respiratory technique was extended even further as Paulikevitch used his mouth to make clicking, sucking and popping sounds, adding cartoon-style sound-effects to his swiveling.Coming soon to a nightmare near you...

My teacher, Ranya, has encouraged me to hum along with the music to help with my breathing. Unfortunately I can't sing even after taking singing lessons in high school! My apologies to all that have to listen to me :)

I knew this thread would be great! I just had to peek in and read about it. Luckily I haven't run into any hummers but hummers in general I think are distracting so I would really have to exercise patience and not say anything to them.

Okay I'm guilty as charged. I hum so I can remember the song and what i'm doing. I also naughty habit of also counting as well. (the only way I can process a choreography and remember it. I apologize if the cats end up gathering atop the fence.

Lol. Oh no...is that why my instructor shoots threatening looks at me from time to time?? I thought it was because she confused me with another Asian girl in the class who hasn't been attending!!
Wow, it all makes sense now...:P

I don't hum in class, but I will "sing/make strange cat-like noises" along with the music while teaching choreography... but they remember it better that way!

Re: anyone else got a "hummer" in class ?
There is a fellow classmate who hums along to every song. I find it very distracting as I notice it very much and she is not always on key or even following the song that well.
At first I thought I was going crazy or something wrong with my hearing, always hearing this weird sound, until I found out what it was. ..g.:

Re: anyone else got a "hummer" in class ?
It is fine to hum along!!!! Recommended, even!!! :D As long as the mouth is relaxed and doesn't look distracting. It really does help in connecting to the music, regulating the breath, and even in engaging the core abs, which are interstiched with the diaphragm muscle. Even if someone is out of tune, usually the music is louder anyway and no one will hear it. When I asked Tito of Egypt if he "dandan"s when he dances ("croons", hums along), he said "Taaban, lazim!" ("of course, one has to!!). And anyone who has seen him live or even on video can see his incredible charisma coming through. Be a hummer, baby!!!
