    Subbing for the first time

So, my teacher has asked if I could sub for one of her classes and this would be my first time! I know the basic break down of the class that she would normally teach but I just can't do what she does. I figure I will warm them up a bit and do some stretching of course. Have them do some walking and a bit of Saidi for fun. I know that she also has us do a short improv piece at the end. This class is two hours tho. What are some fun games that you all have used when subbing? (I am just remembering in grade school when we had a sub and we got to have a day of different stuff)

Planning your class out helps alot. Also go ahead and do a test run by yourself just to see how long things take. I make a syllabus and a playlist. I do a warm up, go thru basic vocabulary, do drills slow then fast and then travelling, teach a quick choreogarphy, have them follow the bouncing butt, do some free styling, and then cool down. I also pause for questions at any time so often we don't get to do everything. The first time I subbed I was totally unprepared. So just prepare yourself and you'll be fine.

Ask your teacher what she thinks are your strong points and if she has suggestions on how to focus a class on those things.

I've subbed for a friend's Tribal Fusion class before, but my friend knew full well that I don't study or perform in her genre. She wanted my class with her students to be different and focus on what I could bring them. I structured the class around learning to hear, and start to move, to 9/8 with an emphasis on music that would be similar to what their primary teacher uses.

With your teacher you won't want to suggest you can bring something she cant, but she must have a reason for asking you and opinions on what you could best work on.

Ok..this sounds a bit silly but it is good sport. One half the class against one wall in a line, the other half against the other. Work on having people move to the center so they all arrive at the same time and line up behind each other and do snake arms for 16 counts, now every one goes back to where they came from using the same traveling step. This works both sides of the body and gets them used to timing and pacing themselves. Make sense?

It is mixed level but really a beginners class at a college. Most are taking it for their PE credit.

I am a little OCD about planning stuff out so I see what you mean. I think this is one of the reasons I am soooo nervous!
