Thread: First Time Teaching

I got a call from a friend of a friend asking me to sub for a class this weekend at a fitness club. I haev thought about teaching a class, but not really known if it would be something I would like or not. I taught the class. Only a few people showed up, but I was told the attendance varies a lot. One person said she was going for a water break, but never returned.

I guess I thought I would either love it or hate it. I didn't really feel either. It was just ok. The small group was very quiet. I felt kind of like the substitute teacher in high school. No one hurled spit balls at me, but I wan't really sure if they like the class at all. I had a good deal of variety in the activities I planned but I was also very accomodating, asking them a few times if there is anything in particular that they would like to work on, and giving them options.

Is it normal to feel kind of blah about subbing? Would a regular class be more rewarding or satisfying?

Hi! I've only subbed once, for Zahra Zuhair's classes. The first one, beginners, was great! They were hungry and loved it. It made me want to teach some day, when I feel I'm qualified. The intermediate/advanced class was very used to Zahra, and I was way more nervous...about that one I can definitely say "blah." ;)

It could be that the students were so used to their regular teachers' routine that they didn't warm up to a little change. I can only hope that having your own class and seeing students week after week and watching them grow is much more rewarding than subbing!

There's a similar thread in this forum if you scroll down a little--it's "The first class you ever taught-how was it?" Maybe not your exact situation, but still a lot of good advice and stories. : )
