    How do you get paid?

Just Wondering about how you Instructors out there who don't teach out of your own studio are getting paid? If you are teaching a class out of a Yoga studio or other dance space, how are your fees structured?

I ask because I recently started teaching out of a Yoga studio. for the first few sessions the women was paying me 40% of students fees collected, and keeping 60% ( she would also take any money spent on advertising off the total fees collected). She took care of all the admin work... taking money signing people up ext. I basically got to show up and teach.
I felt this was fair, or easy at least....??

However now she is wanting me to do all the admin work.... contacting students about upcoming sessions( she wants me to phone not email).....signing people up...ext, however no change in the way I am being paid?

I used to teach Gymnastics and the way I was paid was Very Different!!! so I am Just not sure...

any input would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

Seems like a no-brainer to me: If she wants you to do more work, she needs to pay you more. She is entitled to collecting a set amount for use of her space and perhaps advertising but you should walk away with the majority of the profit. If not, she should find herself another instructor who has less self-worth! Be firm. You may be surprised how she will respect your diplomatic but clear expectations. She can't have her cake and eat it too.

Re: How do you get paid?

I teach through two different park & rec departments, both of which do all of the admin work (taking enrollments and handling payments) and advertising (class listing in the park & rec catalogs that go out to every resident). One park & rec pays me 70% of each student, and the other I just negotiated up to 80% of each student. When I taught through a private yoga studio, I got 70% of each student for class size 5-15, and 60% for 15+.

Personally, I would not accept any payment arrangement where the studio made more than I did per student.

    I get paid in money...

OK, I used to work for a studio and I received a flat per-class rate, along with certain benefits - free studio hire, free classes.

    you Ladies Rock!!!!
When I was teaching Gymnastics, it was through a Community school. I got 75% and the COmmunity school got the rest and they did all the admin. So even at the start I thought 60/40 was a bit Odd.... but I am fairly new to teaching Bellydance. the last studio I taught at I was the "sub Teacher" when our teacher was away. and I got paid by the hour.

Ok sorry I have one more Question.... what do you ladies Charge for a private lesson??? I have a student who is super keep and has been asking to a few PRivate lessons, but as you can probally tell already I have a hard time with money stuff ( yikes I really gotta work on that)

Re: How do you get paid?

At one studio (a ballet school) I pay a flat rental fee. This one I take care of and pay for all the advertising, all the admin work etc.
At the other one (a yoga studio) they do and pay for all the advertising and do all the admin. It's a 50-50 split. I've seen the $ they put into advertising and quite frankly it's WAY out of my league, so I'm happy with that.

If you are figuring a split, also take into consideration how much the student is paying as this effects your take immensely. With the same number of students and a 10 week session, the differences can add up.
For example, studio A might charge $6 per class for a 10 week session. If you're getting 75% of that and you have 15 students, you'll get $675 for the whole 10 weeks, or approx $67 per class, unless you're doing the advertising! Truly effective advertising can add up A LOT. You can work Facebook, yahoo groups, meetups etc for free. But those only go so far unless you're already established as a performer/teacher and students seek instruction specifically from you.
Studio B, might charge each student $14 per class for a 10 week session. With 15 students at a 50% rates you'll get $1,050 for the ten week session, or just over $100 per class. If they're doing effective advertising (with "effective" being the key word), you're set!

It seems you and the studio have already agreed to the terms and now she's getting greedy. That's nonsense. Put your foot down. Before putting your foot down however, it might be prudent to scout around elsewhere. Make sure you have a website or something so your students can find you if you do make a move.

I used to teach for a ballet studio. We had a 50/50 split, then as classes grew she wanted to go to a per hour rate. I did not allow it as i was doing all the ad work.
I would go for more work if I had a bigger portion of the slit otherwise just say no.

Re: How do you get paid?

I am paid through a yoga studio at $4 per student per class. We share in marketing and the studio does all the admin work otherwise. Feels like a fair deal to me. My privates are $40 at my home and $40 plus rental fee at a studio or $40 plus travel at their home.
