MidEast Mfg has some for $8-12 each or used to. You can order them directly or through Amazon.

    Re: inexpensive zills

I don't teach with them, because I don't teach, but I do play them. I have both El Coyotes and some Egyptian sand cast zills. I also have Saroyan and Zildjian double slotted zills. I find that with double slotted zills, I don't allow them to ring like bells. The natural tendency, for me, is to use them more like clappers because the zill actually connects with my fingers. With single hole, I am able to create more of a bell sound.

Now, that having been said, consistent edging is a little more of a challenge.

Lucy has some nice inexpensive ones at Scheherezade Imports. They are $9 or $10 a set and have a decent sound. I've been very pleased with them in my classes.

Any time. If you ever want to try single holed zills and we are going to be at the same workshop, let me know a head of time and I'll bring them with me! Try before you buy!

    Re: inexpensive zills

I've gotten cheapo zills on Ebay in bulk. They don't sound wonderful but they're good for beginners in that they do make a noise (and that's part of the battle - letting yourself be noisy). I do not allow my students to use single-hole zills because they're harder to control BUT if someone arrives with them I encourage at least 3/4" elastic instead of the elastic cord. With thicker elastic the single-hole zills don't wobble as much.
