Ewww. 'Nuff said.

Came across this while looking at dance sites that list other area classes. <shakes head a lot>. The description makes me want to die. This studio is somehow suddenly the #1 link on Google when looking up NYC belly dance classes.

I just keep repeating this mantra, "A stripper dressed as a nurse doesn't mean nurses are strippers..." Of course, most people don't think nurses are strippers or close to it in the first place...

You folks are overreacting. Everything is better with a little belly dancing thrown in, especially things that men really enjoy. I'm developing my own set of workshop topics where belly dancing is fused with other stuff guys like. Here's what I've go so far, so don't y'all go stealing my ideas...

Belly Dance "Honey Do"
Nothing will turn your man on faster than having you finish off those stupid household chores you've been nagging him to do while you're entertaining him with some exotic belly dancing at the same time. Learn sexy chest isolations you can perform while cleaning out gutters, and the five best traveling shimmies for push lawnmowers. A short Khaleeji choreography with helpful tips for getting long hair clogs out of bathtub drains will be taught. Yalla, housework!

Belly Dance and Televised Football
Make your man take notice on Superbowl Sunday! All eyes in the room will be on YOU instead of those wacky, overpriced commercials in between the plays when you recreate the sensuous and historically accurate fertility ritual known as "The Dance of the Seven-Layer Nachos"! Learn how to do seductive floorwork to quiet, sultry taqsims, so you don't obstruct the television. Workshop participants will receive a free photo of John Madden with a turban photoshopped onto his head to decorate your "Sultan's Lair."

That sounds right up my alley. I personally like Bombay Belly Dance Buffet:

Two parties, a wedding, a corporate event and a 6-hour drum solo workshop in one week. Now, it's a gig-free Sunday afternoon and girl, you must be HUNGRY! Get thee to your nearest Indian Buffet! For $13.95, just a fraction of the tips you made, you can gorge yourself on tandoori chicken, samosas, naan, 4 different veggie dishes, chicken tikka masala, and those sticky honey balls, I forget what in the Dickens they're called. Still hungry? Go back for seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths! There's no "no more" in Indian buffet! You might waddle out the door feeling too fat to go home and practice, but you can't wait for next weekend's trip to the Indian buffet!

Who needs cane when you can do "Saidi Broom Work"! I really dig the bbq version too :)

but seriously, blargh, especially considering the very culturally correct and talented/knowledgeable people this instructor says she learned from. If they knew she was doing this they'd whack her upside the head with that pole

haha i've actually done an impromptu saidi piece with a broom before, sans the actual broom/brush part. that thing was heavy and too long lol

but jokes aside, that really sucks but i can't even imagine how that get's done though. pole dancing seems HARD, just imagine having to try and hoist yourself up there and do tricks, how does that even work with incorporating belly dance? i'd rather not know though lol

My teacher posed for an ad once where she, the belly dancer, was standing in a living room looking peeved off as her male audience oohed and ahhed over a beer fridge in the foreground. It would not work!

My friend did impromptu saidi with a pool cue once.

Pole belly? It's just lame. Lamey lamerson. And I'm at a loss as to how they'd "belly" pole anyway. Do they do it in special gripping harems? Hang upside down doing head-slides and genie arms? Do normal pole to Arabic pop (or better yet Bollywood).

Last year, my Urban Desert Dancers Troupe debuted our new theatrical belly dance number "Desperate Housewives Saidi"...this is a fully 'proper' saidi number, just done in these costumes and swinging brooms, mops...and Swiffers!

Unfortunately, not yet...the number is very fun...lighted hearted and my 'send up' of exactly the kind of "Belly Dance Meets Outrageous Fusion" stuff that's been going on in the fringes of our community...

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I have to play the devil's advocate for a moment:

What's so bad about pole dance? Are all of the negative reactions on this thread coming from the perception that pole dance is nothing but grinding on a pole for the titillation of men?

Because if so, I hope you all realize that good pole dancing requires a LOT of skill and training and can be as artistic as any other dance form and as athletic as any other gymnastic.

And given this fact, I think that dismissing it as nothing but stripping is exactly the same thing we are constantly complaining about other people doing to us. So hey, if you don't like it when someone thinks you are a stripper because you say you belly dance, maybe you shouldn't do the exact same thing to a practitioner of another art form that you know nothing about.

There is pole dancing at strip clubs, but that doesn't mean there's all there is to it. A lot of belly dancers in the Middle East are prostitutes, but that doesn't mean every belly dancer is a prostitute.

Personally, I think aerial dance is one of the most beautiful artforms out there. This includes silks, trapeze, and yes, pole dance.

Why is there such an aversion to pole dancing when the same aversion doesn't occur to aerial silks, which requires many of the same skills and is aesthetically similar? For the same reason some people have an aversion to belly dance: a perception that it is done to arouse men and that as such, it is part of the sex industry.

As for a fusion of pole dance with belly dance, I will say that I don't see how the two could work well together. But I don't see why it should be off-limits for someone who is both a good pole dancer and a good belly dancer to try.

I think it's the trying to put Belly Dancing (a family-friendly dance) together with pole dancing (usually performed for the titillation of men).

I agree 100% that pole dancing requires tremendous strength and agility, and that a "good dancer" of any kind will train hard to get good at whatever it is he/she does.

Belly dance and pole dance have nothing in common, except for that mentioned in the paragraph above.

No need for the asbestos suit, yameyameyame.
