Thread: Ranya Renee in the UK?!

Just recieved an e-mail from Ranya Renee's mailing list saying that she will be teaching at the end of January in London "to be confirmed". Ranya is a superhero of mine - I think she is incredible! Does anyone know who might be organising this? I would like to e-mail them to let them know that if they decide to bring Ranya to the UK, I'll be there with skates on :)

Since Anne White had invited her to perform at PE, last month, my first thought would be to keep an eye on the planet egypt website.

I dont know for UK but 22-23 January she is teaching workshops in Athens !!

I found out (too late) that she was performing at Planet Egypt! I was gutted but prob wouldn't have been able to afford to go anyway :(

She didn't in the end, she had to cancel, because of sickness, I think.

That's a shame. I've seen elsewhere that shes back in 2011 - maybe Jan? Hope so! Will deft keep an eye out!

As far as I know, she's still looking at possible dates. I'll post as soon as I know anything more concrete.

Yes, I just confirmed with Anne, and even if i have to swim across a channel, I'll be dancing at Planet Egypt! ..g.:

I expect to be in London for a few days in between my workshops in Athens (Jan. 22-23) and Stockholm (Jan. 28-30). I am happy to teach private lessons or a small group workshop during the weeknights or weekdays that i'll be in London. I have some other plans to firm up for that time period (Jan. 24-27), but please let me know if you'd be interested.

Looking forward to it and starting to practice my English accent....

It will be a small intimate group with lots of personal attention for you, in a supportive atmosphere. And, uh, fun! Cost: This depends on how many people attend.
Ranya's fee is £162.00 per teaching hour which is divided between all students.
The studio fee for 4 hours is £68.00 to be divided between all students.
Each student has to pay £1 to be a member of the studio for the day (this is compulsory).
At the moment there are 8 students confirmed so each student would pay £81.00 for 4 hours of tuition, £8.50 for the studio and £1.00 = £90.50 per person.

The more people attend, the less the cost per individual. So, if you want to come, bear in mind that the cost will be less than that shown above!

Topics of study: There is a list of topics to choose from. The descriptions used below are taken from Ranya's own written list of topics. At the moment the most popular topics according to feedback I have received are:

1)"Authentic Accordion Beledi"--focuses on developing your improvised solo to this most Egyptian part of the Oriental dance show, based on understanding the musical components and transitions in this form. This workshop covers the different types of beledi a band might play for a dancer (or that can be found on dance CDs), some historical context and music information to help dancers interpret the music, which is the least "Western" part of the Arabic show, with roots in rural folk music of Egypt.

2)“Character in Performance”—Acting for Dancers –Explores the different moods and emotional colors that bring interest and fun to the bellydance show. This work allows dancers to bring out different aspects of their personality in performance, using the language of Oriental dance and the dance show as a vehicle for personal expression. Character work is a liberating vehicle for bringing out different moods in the dance and allowing dancers to tap into universal human emotions to bring them into greater communication with an audience.

3) "Improvisation: Choreographing on the Spot"--Practicum on getting students to improvise using general guidelines for creating floor patterns and using energy in the space, working with the music phrasing and cultural considerations. This helps the dancer to create structure in the dance show even when she is improvising, and it gives the dancer more confidence in her improvisational skills.

There are many more to choose from but obviously we are limited to what can be studied in the 4 hours of time that we have. Please get in contact with me on here if you are interested in coming along to what promises to be a great workshop!

I should probably start a new thread for Jan. 2012, but i actually don't know how to do that!!
I'm a little forum-challenged....

The info on the workshops that Hazel helped organize is actually from January 2011...
To be clear, nothing in terms of workshops or lessons has been set up in London yet for January 2012, but I'll be available for a few days in there.

I will be dancing at Planet Egypt the evening of Thursday January 26th. I will make my travel plans soon, likely going through Dublin. I could be in London or nearby to teach semi-privates, privates or small groups, as early as Tuesday or Wednesday of that week, and will need to leave by Saturday early morning, as I'll be teaching in Stockholm (Jan. 28-29) and then Paris (Feb. 4 and Feb. 11-12) and Montpellier (Feb. 5).

I know it's only a brief stop in London, but i am looking forward to seeing people again, I had so much fun this past time. :-)
