One Door Closes...
... and hopefully another one opens.
I'm just feeling semi-sentimental as tommorrow night will be the last student recital at the studio... my teacher is "downsizing" her life.
She'll still teach technique and privates at a different dance studio, but I'll miss the sense of structure I had for the last ten years
even though we'll all be around and many of us will continue dancing around town and together.
Anyway, perhaps another door opens? I'm looking forward to taking other kinds of dance classes as well as just having some nights free again ( as much as I can considering my theatre schedule). But I'm also a little nervous and excited... I'm teaming up with a friend of mine to offer a night of choreography classes starting in a month. I guess I'll get a true taste of what it's like to run a school, without the safety net of being hired by someone else!
Wish me luck.. I know I'll ( as always) lean on some of the great advice from Bhuzzers on these subjects...and I do my last solo to a live band tommorrow night. Lord knows I can't afford these guys on my own, and I'm not on anyone's short-list to dance in an Arab night-club..l;, !

Change is so darn hard isn't it?
Just changed from working for a ballet studio for my belly dance classes to going off on my own, lots of change.
But you know, it forces you to make changes and you make ones that are good for you.
You sound like you already have, good luck with your classes!

It's sad that your teacher is 'downsizing' but you have th right attitude. This is a new opportunity for you for sure....
Maybe learn a new technique or a new style or just a different method of teaching :D It can only get better :D
And good luck with starting to teach! :D

Things always change. At least you will have a continuing dance community to be a part of (even with the change making your part a new for you). I had once been a member of a dance studio (and a dancer in the studio's troupe). Then I'd been a member of the dance troupe when the studio disbanded. Then there were major changes in the group - politics in another troupe (our parent troupe aka our former teachers from the studio) caused a fracture in our troupe that took the troupe from being a 12 member troupe down to a 3 member troupe. Then our youngest member moved far away. Then eventually my last partner in the troupe retired leaving me to play with myself all alone in my community. We all know that is not a lot of fun. So the only door that I felt was open at that time was to begin teaching my own self (without the benefit of being able to learn by assisting an experienced teacher) and that was with nine years of dance (only the first four through the structured environment of a studio) under my belt. In the 18 years since (has it really been 18!?! - scratches head cause that just doesn't seem correct) ..g.: thigs just keep changing. Now finally, partly through my efforts (as in never giving up on the dance even when I've hit the nastiest of the dancer plateau/depressions) and partly through dancers I've inherited (read that - dancers who've moved to my little backwater) I am now once again a member of a functioning, performing, growing dance troupe...g.: I know that more changes are in store for me - nothing stays the same (that's life). It's hanging on to our dance through our darkest hours (sometimes desperately) that can be some of our biggest challenges. One remembers where one has been/what one has come through (all those things in our past that have made us who we are today), and looks forward eagerly to both the trials and triumphs of our future.
Eek! Where did that soapbox come from?!?!..g.:
