I'm starting to get more common requests for bulk private prices and coaching packages. How do you bulk your prices so they feel like they get a good deal but you don't feel like you're not getting paid appropriately?

I was thinking a number of hours like 10, to be used whenever they want over a period of time, for a certain price. Or a certain number of hours a week for a set number of weeks...

I was able to give a discount if the dancer was willing to do her private lessons right before or after class- so I saved a little on my cost for studio space and passed it on to her (not to mention my gas savings, etc.!) So, that's largely how I priced it- I subtracted the cost of an extra trip into town (which makes a difference with these gas prices!)

For those who want more than a one- (or two-) off lessons, I have created packages that are a certain number of hours within a certain time frame, so it's like a "session" of classes. This way, the student knows how many hours he/she's getting and that there is a time limit in which he/she can use them.

An example: I have a package of 6 hours that must be used over no more than 9 weeks. In a simple agreement which both teacher and student sign, I specify a start date (our first meeting date) and an end date (the last date we can meet within this package). I am paid upfront. Unless there is some dire extenuating circumstance on the part of the student, if he/she doesn't use the 6 hours within the 9 weeks, the money is mine. This policy is the same as that for the cities for which I teach in sessions and I think it's a good one and quite fair, especially since I do have the power of discretion.

The hours can be scheduled as fits our schedules. If you want to do your six hours in 2 two-hour + 2 one-hour sessions and it works with my schedule, then that's fine.

As to pricing, I give a 10% discount on the one-off rate for packages; current classroom students get a total of 20% on the same packages as long as they are currently enrolled.

Also, two students can share one package; a third student would pay 50% of the package price.

This is totally what i was thinking! But what do you mean when you say one off or two off.... i don't get that part...

1 off or 2 off usually means it is a stand alone, one (or 2) time deal, not part of a continuing program.

I offer a four-pack of privates at a discount. In order to get the discount, the student has to pay for all four privates up front. I give them a ton of time to use them too... a full year, I think. I'm considering shortening that up though, since most of my private lesson students who take advantage of the deal come at least once a month.
