Does anyone have any input on a Friday evening class???
Either teaching on or taking one???
It would be an early class, like 6:15-7:30.
Thanks :)

Hey Roxxanne!
I have never taught on Friday nights, so cannot speak from personal experience.
However several years ago at the studio I teach out of there was a salsa class on Friday nights, and apparently she did pretty well with attendance. But she taught on other days as well, and I think she promoted her Friday class as a precursor to going out--come to class, get warmed up for the club kind of thing.
If I were going to teach on a Friday night I think I would make it as early as possible for 9 to 5-ers to come straight from work, and I would probably hold a more intermediate or advanced class.
Look forward to hearing other replies.
M.

I personally never hold a regular group class on a Friday or Saturday, because that is when I am most likely to get booked for a gig, attend workshops, or be in a show/hafla. This might not be an issue for you, especially with an early class, if gigs are later in the evening, close by and you don't need tons of prep time. But since I generally go on around 7-8pm, and travel to Chicago so much, it just wouldn't work for me.
I think the salsa teacher's idea above about marketing a Friday class as a warmup to an evening out is a great one.

It would have to be a very special class* to get me to go on a Friday evening--either I've got other plans or I'm dead tired from the work week/shows/classes/etc. Or possibly my husband would like to know what I am like when I'm not sleeping or dancing and perhaps even eat a meal together
*how to dance exactly like Fifi Abdo, for example, or unleash your inner Dina...

Oi Roxxanne, tudo bem?
I also never taught classes Friday, its the international gig day!
I would do an ealier class like a noon class, but not in the evening..at least here where I leave. But in a big city might work.

Roxxanne, I would try to get to your class on a Friday night on the nights I could get a babysitter.
How about Sundays?? Hardly anyone in LA teaches on Sundays and I know a few dancers around town that are itchin' for one!

A 5:30 or 5:45 class right after work on Fridays is great. I used to go to one but I stopped when I changed jobs and I couldn't make it in time. The class was always packed. If you can get an after work crowd it can work. It's a nice way to get a class in and still have time to do other things on Friday night.

I taught a Friday night class for several years and it was very successful - it was at 6 p.m., and students always talked about it as a great transition into the weekend - shaking off the workday weariness.

I used to take a 6-8 PM class on Fridays (I need to get back to it :)), but it was taught by Faten Salama and that woman can motivate you like no one else. I don't think that I would have been up for it with any of my other teachers, even though they are all really good as well. I just think, motivating people on Friday takes some thing really special to keep me going.

Roxy,
Jenza teaches a Friday night class in Pasadena I think. There are very few in LA (you can check the bellydancela.com class page if you haven't already).
I'm not a fan of Friday classes - all I want to do at the end of the week is relax at home. Weekend classes on the other hand are my favorites!

*is jealous*
I went to my first workshop with Faten Salama last year. What a brilliant teacher & gorgeous dancer! She's the best kept secret in the U.S., I think!

Hi Roxanne,
I would go to an early Friday night class because I have kids and that evening works well for me since they are with their Dad. But, if you were teaching somewhere on Long Beach, Lakewood or O.C., I couldn't go. Actualy, I am teaching an 8-week class on Fridays from 6 - 7 p.m. during the Summer only. We'll see how it goes. Are you available for a workshop on a Saturday morning?

waaaaaaaah, i miss Faten's friday night classes!! it's true that she is worth giving up friday nights for, and that not many teachers or classes would be. just can't currently overcome pregnancy exhaustion + trading psycho au pair who quit for a sitter i'd have to pay like 6 extra hours for me to stay up in dc all afternoon/evening friday. sigh.

I take a Friday night class with Fahtiem at LBCC. I like cause it I don't have have to get up at 5:00 am on Saturday like I do the rest of the week. The class is pretty full, about 45 half way into the semester and much larger the first few weeks. But it's a college class so there's pressure to show up.
