Thread: list of instructors who teach veil IMPROV

Other than Nahari, do you know of teachers (preferably with an email or website) who teach veil improv? Understanding that veil 'technique' will be part of the curriculum as well but does anyone have specific workshops or class series focusing on how to dance with a veil by using an existing 'vocabulary' of movements..with the emphasis on improv?

I am teaching a beginner veil workshop tonight, and that will be very standard- mechanics of the veil, holds, technique, and choreography.

However, later in the winter, I am planning to teach both a double veil workshop and an advanced veil workshop. The advanced veil will have a focus on improvisation- using an existing vocabulary of movements, with a strong focus on transitions.

However, I haven't taught it yet!

I always improvise when I dance veil, and that's how I teach it. I'll teach students some combinations, and then I'll put the music on and improvise using the combinations, and they follow me. This shows them how the transitions from one move to another work. And then I give them music to do their own improvisation while I watch.

Much like Shira, I always teach veil as technique and improvisation unless I am teaching a specific choreography. My usual process is to teach the technique, then transitions between movement types, then combinations, and finally finishing with improvisation.

Ditto here- this year I taught a 13 week veil session- technique and improv/transition/concepts type thing. I could certainly translate that to workshop.

Are there teachers who teach veil technique but NOT veil improv? Trying to wrap my mind around how that would work. I've always thought the two went hand-in-hand, and they've been taught together everywhere I've studied.

Yep, they're out there. I've worked with two teachers who only taught choreographies--with or without veil. You were talked through the various wraps and you drilled specific veil moves or combos, and then you applied them in a choreography.

One time, after I spent an 8-week session teaching veil technique in improvised format, my students pleaded with me to put what they'd been learning into a packaged choreography to help them practice/internalize it. So I did. It's not the way I prefer to teach veil, but this particular group of students wanted it so I accommodated them. I haven't used that choreography since then, but I could always dust it off if I had a group of students that really wanted me to.

This is what I've done with sagat. We have a "drill" choreography that we do, just to make sure we still do them regularly.
