Thread: "......woman is first. Men are consorts....."

Although I don't post much in the Suburb Forums of the Swap Meet (where are the smilies?), I do read many of the threads. I missed the entire "Elitism" thread when I had the flu & was too late to insert this comment -- somewhere there was mention of the transitioning of importance from the male dancer to the female in ballet. Thought ya'all might enjoy this quote from Balanchine:

"In my ballets, woman is first. Men are consorts. God made men to sing the praises of women. They are not equal to men: They are better." (Of course, Zorba and Horacio Cifuentes are the exceptions .....)

I think it's a nice quote somehow, somewhere, but it makes my inner feminist (who's a big, opinionated loudmouth) cringe in pain. Equal, not less or more.

Balanchine was also responsible for dancers starving themselves by demanding that he see their bones, so his is a particularly hateful and controlling kind of woman power.

Yeah, unfortunately it seems the cultures who have this attitude that women are wonderful and better than men are also the ones who tend to think that means women must be kept locked away and covered up. For their own protection, you know, because they're so special they need to be kept safe and not looked at by just anybody and yada yada.

(Either that, or "women are soooo wonderful" is just the excuse they use for such behavior. I suspect it may be a mix of both, but perhaps more of the latter, really.)

I posted this because I found it amusing within the context of the "elitism" thread, it wasn't meant to be serious .... I agree with Zum's post above, and yours as well. Just thought it might be fun to pop it in here for a chuckle .... never even occurred to me that it would be taken seriously! ()
