    Letting Go of the Rigid

Last night an ex-student invited me to a small BBQ with some of her friends - including two other ex-students who I hadn't seen for some years. Sounded like fun - and as it turned out there were several other people there I knew from non-belly dance circles. Student A suggested that she, myself and student B do a short improv performance for the party. After two beers it sounded like a good idea but as the day wore on it didn't happen and that was fine.

Finally the hostess moves the party into a more umm, unusual, private area of her home. Her partner shows me an interesting adaptation of a hip belt crafted in leather for fetish performances. The attention to detail was very nice.

Seems the performance is still on but the class belly dance CD which we could have danced to wouldn't play on the CD player and was replaced by something unknown but Middle Eastern. Hey, she did say improv - but that was a little more than I expected. Given the atmosphere the resulting performance was a little more risque than normal but it was well received.

In fact our dancing inspires the guests - with two (one male, one female) then doing their own belly dance duet wearing only (the non-leather) hip belts. (I did suggest such talent could be further developed with classes ..l;, - and clothes) - and then one of the funniest male striptease I've ever seen.

The point? Well, our performance was pretty straight - people liked it and then saw the dancing through their own world view and "improved" it by removing the unnecessary bits - like costumes. Did I walk out in a huff as they desecrated the art I have spent years and thousands of dollars on? No, had a laugh and went home.

Take the art seriously - but not yourself. ..g.:

Actually no - a very conservative Greek friend who would never have stayed at the BBQ once the toys came out, bought a lovely Abla and decided that was the only way to wear it. After all, the point is that no-one gets to see.

Nothing wrong with no knickers under a slinky lycra number with cutouts, just so long as you don't take a skid on your veil like my teen student did once at an open night. I was impressed with her composure nonetheless.

hehe. sounds like a wild party!
i think people will always take what they like and what inspires them, and adapt it to their own esthetics. it's actually kind of flattering that you inspired all that dancing.

What fun! It's these "outside the box" gigs that give us the best stories to tell for years afterward!
