Thread: Private Lessons - Significant Other wants to attend?

I've been contacted to teach a private lesson. The gentleman contacting me had seen me dance the previous evening and I had gotten his date up to dance at the restaurant I was working at, and later gave them my card. After explaining my fees for a private lesson, he said that he would be there also and doing whatever moves he could but that the lesson was for his female friend. I told him I'd have to charge him also if he was going to be there. Have you ever had this happen and do you charge both people? Thanks for any input!

I let two people with similar abilities and objectives share a private lesson. If its more than two, I scale up a little, but nowhere near the full private lesson fee per person.

I don't normally double the price, but in this case I most definitely would as a weirdo deterrent. If he's in the room, he dances AND he pays. Otherwise she can show him what she learned when she gets home.

I have the same policy as Ssipes. But it would also depend on how you felt about the gentleman when you were interacting with him if you want to use cost as a deterrent. Best wishes for a happy resolution!

Two people costs more than one - but nothing like double. If I was sure he was not some sort of creep I'd be happy to have him along - but make it clear whether you are teaching her, him, or both.

I had quoted him 1/2 price for himself, hoping it would deter him; just felt weird to me but not threatening. He's called back to book so I guess he's legit. thanks for your responses :)

If it was me, I'd take MY SO along. After all, you don't know if the female actually exists.

Might be just fine--I had a similar thing where a female student said her hubby wanted to learn some moves with her; it was something they both wanted to try a private lesson together.
(Poor guy, he was so stiff in his upper body frm years of gymnastics and weight lifting that he had a very hard time with the movements!). I ended up doing three lessons with him, and he tried very hard. She joined my regular classes and did well.
I do like the suggestion of having a friend or SO there for your lesson (or maybe an advanced student friend who "happens to be there finishing her private lesson" as man and girlfriend arrive?). Also, holding the lesson at a public studio might feel safer than having it at a private residence.
