Thread: Half circle vs rectangular veil

How and why do you choose one over the other? How are they different to dance with?

I know there are some things you can do with a rectangular veil that you can't do with a half circle. For example, that toss up in the air, walk under it, and catch on the narrow end move couldn't be done with a half circle.

I know the way the half circle moves looks different from a retangular...I see more ripples when moving forward with a half circle than a rectangular...

What differences do you see? Which do you prefer?

Can you tell I'm shopping for a new veil?

Half circles: great for double veil, reduces bulk of fabric while still giving an impressive look, creates a different line when you dance with them, more aerodynamic, I feel. with a contrasting color on the cicular edge, it accentuates that ripple effect and gives a look of constant motion.

rectangles are great for coverage, for veil tricks, (envelope, etc) and are more easily manipulated, as you mentioned. HOWEVER, I think you can manipulate the 1.2 circles, it just takes more practice.

I did a veil piece recently where I somehow managed to twist my very colorful half circle, tossed it up and caught it on the straight edge, much as you mention tossing the rectangular up.

The large half circles can be danced with one at a time ..they are great for smaller restaurant spaces or for simple flourishes or frames when you are dancing floor work. By large I mean a half circle that is 3 yards long by 55 inches wide. If you like to tuck and dance with multiple veils, the half circles are less bulky and tuck easier. They also make pretty wraps.

But rectangles are the bread and butter ..it's good to know how to handle both. :)
