dancing after a hip replacement op?

    Hi there
I've just had an enquiry from a would-be student who's had a hip replacement operation and wants to know if my class would be for her - has anyone got any experience or advice for me? Thanks lots!

You are not the person to ask - she should ask her doctor!

But basically, if she can walk, run etc. she can dance.

My father had his hip joint replaced some years ago. He is in his mid-sixties and very sporty. Bicycling, nordic skiing, roller blading...
Actually now that he has one artificial joint, the other one got better by itself.

First of all she should speak with her surgeon. How long ago did she have it?

My mother has had a hip replacement and in the first year she didn't do a lot of exercise, had physio, and walked to strengthen her hip. But now nearly 3 years later she does everything she has always done and finds it a lot easier, she doesn't belly dance, but does ball room dancing and walking. The first year she was advised to take it easy, don't do high impact stuff, and her exercise was gradually built up. But the new hip is meant to be able to do as much if not better than the replaced hip.

Maybe if the lady is still in her first year she may be advised not to BD yet. Just get her to check with her doctor maybe take some sort of BD movement plan with her to show him.

It depends on how long ago her hip replacement. The first few months she has restrictions/precautions of bending more than 90 degrees on the hip, crossing leg and internal rotation. She should check with her surgeon if all her restrictions been lifted off. The new hips now can handle any activities they are much better than it used to be, still probably not very good to do high impact like jumping but dancing should be fine as long as the restrictions been lifted off.
    I hope that helps.

Wow, thanks guys. That's great to know - I'd never really thought about a replacement hip being better than the old one, but I guess that's the whole point!!
Hopefully she'll come to class tomorrow and I'll find out what her doctor has said and how she's managing with everything else - I don't know how long ago the op was.
Thanks again - I'll keep you posted!
