    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

I think the flutters that are done with layering are the ones that use the breath (rather than just the diaphram). At least, that's the way Princess Farhana teaches it and she layers all kinds of crazy stuff over her flutters. To practice engaging this muscle, start with panting (like a dog) and then remove the visible/audible signs and keep the diaphram working. According to the Princess, practicing every day for just 5 minutes will get you a layerable flutter in just 3 months!

Cory is on this board....maybe she'll share her strategy?

    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

hi....was told i was being paged!
i used to sing opera..10 years of it actually.
flutters are with the diaphram, as if you ran a mile, isolated the diaphram, and panted.
i roll top to bottom and bottom to top.one of those i have done since birth, it is genitic, like cureling ones tounge.the other i trained myself to do.
when you sing, you hold long notes by total control of your lungs/diaphram.you teach yourself those skills.
so i took that knowledge, and taught myself to follow drum solos with the differant muscle groups of my torso.
when on the floor, i do stomach work in a "cleo bridge" or "posession position"
my back is arched weight on my head and bottom heel of crossed legs.i usually flutter /roll, before the whole body freeze which i engeneer from a ballet move , done at the barr.sorta pointing your toe so tight, your leg (body) quiveers.
    ....sorry for sp/typos....in a hurry

    Thanks, Cory.

Heneras, I told Cory I thought you might be interested in doing a student exchange program to have some one-on-ones with her (I am very fortunate I get to take private lessons with Cory!). Yet another reality show, "Dancer Swap?" - You could come to California and I get to visit Italy. My husband is a great cook!

    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

Cory, I'm interested in what you say about singing.

I'm a classically trained singer too and I put my inability to flutter down to the fact that I'm a singer!

When I'm singing my support is held and strong (not tense, but still) and the neck and throat are relaxed and the breath is even. I'm creating a column of sound that flows upwards through the throat with space created by the combination of diaphragmatic support and throat/upper body relaxation.

When people try to teach me the technique of breathing in, cutting off the breath at the top and then fluttering underneath, I get so tense I completely freeze because to choke the breath like that seems so counter-intuitive. And my muscles over the diaphragm naturally want to hold still.

I find I can flutter when I sit down, but when I stand and try to do it (or try on all fours as some people recommend) I can only hold, not release.
I have a very strong diaphragm from singing and lots of control over the support muscles around that area but I just can't translate that into flutters. Bellyrolls and other abdominal work is no problem so I know it's not down to lack of co-ordination in that area.

Aziza's got me almost there and I'm having a private with Princess Farhana in a couple of weeks so maybe she can help but I get really, really frustrated over this one. It drives me mad ,m::

    Any suggestions?

Mine comes & goes but I notice that if I lift the bottom set of abs & tighten the side waist first, it seems to be easier. One of my teachers recommended a sneaky soft breath with the mouth slightly open in a pleasant half-smile.

    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

I played the flute for 12 years and had a great vibrato but I don't think it helped me at all in doing flutters. I admit I don't work too hard on them since I really don't feel the urge to use them too much, but I've gotten it to the point where it's 50/50 with reliability. The idea of holding my breath is what holds me back I think, because I tense up and you need to be relaxed. Like you, sunshine, I can do it fine while sitting but that doesn't help much in dance unfortunately

    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

Ah, I'm a mezzo - a Mahler girl. And anything above a top A terrifies me!

But I sang a lot of Bach, Purcell and Handel so I can do the trills and runs and presumably we still produce sound in much the same way?

    Re: Flutters In Movement !!

i think the heavier mezzo, uses the lower torso muscles, where as all that high frilly crap, i did high on the diaphram.
i loved the mozart...he wrote for a cousin with the range i had....but the "queen of the faires", ..jewel song...il bachio.....good god i hated the nelly stuff!

You're right - I support pretty deep and low.

Oh how I'd love to be able to do Violetta, and Queen of the Night - lovely feminine songs. Mezzos get nags, hags and fags.
