Thread: please help me fill in my lists

As I mentioned in the Egyptian Dancers to Know thread, I'm putting together lists for my students so that they can get familiar with their dance heritage. I would really like your help in filling out my lists.

I've got the Egyptian Dancers on their own thread but here are the rest. I thought I'd put them all in together. These list don't necesssarily need to be comprehensive, but I do want to make sure I hit the most important major players that a dancer really should be aware of. Here is what I have so far, you will notice I have some weak areas. I haven't yet started on the non-Middle Eastern list, but it will be forthcoming.

Will you please help me to tighten this up and fill it out? thank you bhuzzers!

yep, Najwa is Lebanese, so is Nawal Al Zoghbi. What about Fares Karam? He's big around here, mostly for debke (El Tannoura, etc.).

Lebanese dancers to add:
Dani Boustros
Howaida Hachem
Nariman Aboud
Nabila Metwali
Maya Abi Saad
Dina Jamal

Do you really think Nawal Al Zoghbi and Fares Karam are must knows?

Anybody Turkofile here? I could really use some knowledge in the Turkish Music section. I expect to do some learning from these lists as well.

For Egyptian singers, I would prioritize these four as "must know":

Oum Kalthoum
Mohammed Abdel Wahab
Farid al-Atrache
Abdel Halim Hafez

For Turkish dancers, you might consider adding Ozel.

For Lebanese musicians, I'd recommend adding Setrak Sarkissian.

Well, I guess my personal opinion is they'd be on the lines of Haifaa; although she's more popular now, I think Nawal's music is more dance-able. And I added Fares because debke is big around here and we have a large Lebanese population. I have never compiled a list of "must know" music artists and if I did, I wouldn't know where to start. I guess I'm just not that "in the know" to add suggestions so feel free to disregard...how do you distinguish what's the "must knows" among popular music?

Well if you are a current dancer on the circuit at Lebanese nightclubs the knowing who Fares Karam is would be handy. If the dancer is doing a cane dance to Dabke then they can ask for a Fares Karam song.

you know, you are right, they are on the level with haifa, and I have used their music myself, I 'll add them.
